Hi lanelkins, My uncle Charles Cornford died during operation Vulcan on 28 April 1943. He was in 1st Battalion Royal Sussex. He is buried at Enfidaville cemetery inTunisia.
Could be attached to the Sussex as a Battlefield Replacement, CWGC error or transferred to Sussex Regiment before deploying overseas to name a few reasons. Casualty
CORNFORD, CHARLES JOHN. Corporal. Service Number 6398692. Died 28/04/1943. Aged 28. 1st Bn. Royal Sussex Regiment Son of Rosina Mary Cornford, and stepson of James Albert Page, of Ore, Hastings, Sussex. Nice epitaph in view of Additional Information "We never forget you, in our hearts you are near. Loved and sadly missed. Dad and family" (Initially recorded as Cornfield, but corrected.)
His number is a Royal Sussex one.6398692 Would not have transfered from Suffolks another regiment. Royal Sussex Regiment 6390001 - 6446000 Were GS Caps issued in 1943 ? Is the photo of someone else.
Gibraltar castle in the centre is too big for Suffolk Regiment. I think that it is a Northamptonshire Regiment cap badge. Regards Frank
Well, blow me down. I did post the wrong photo. That was in my parents photos, no idea who it is. Here is the right one.
