This year Remembrance Sunday (2010) falls on the 14th of November.

Since 1947 I have made a point of watching this on TV and have never actually taken part as one of the marchers simply because I always attend the AJEX ceremony which, by custom, always falls on the following Sunday and therefore will be held on the 21st November.

This year however I have decided to test the water and march with the AJEX contingent, on both the two Sundays.

There is a reason for my breaking with custom this year.

For quite some time now the AJEX ceremony at the Cenotaph has been attended by dwindling numbers. Although we still manage to draw at least a thousand odd marchers inevitably there will come a time when there are insufficient numbers to warrant holding the parade and ceremony and it has already been mooted that we join the main British Legion ceremony instead.


I am looking forward to the actual ceremony on the 14th and will report back here after the event.

 

Thanks for the heads up on the date Ron,

I was thinking of going along this year, I might go to the Victorian embankment and be near the Chindit memorial, where I think the Old Comrades Association hold a small ceremony in honour of Wingate's men.

As a slightly younger man I think it is time to show support on these occasions.

Remembrance Sunday is always the second Sunday of November, so it is not hard to forget.

Anyone in Berlin on this date is more than welcome to attend the CWGC on Heerstrasse.

We will have Pipes and Drum marching as per Armed Forces day for the service which starts at 10.00 hrs and is followed by the Church service held at St Georges Church for 11.00hrs.

WE have our parade here in Agassiz on November 11th as it is a National Day off - we could use a crowd as while the local High School is full for the service - the parade is a whole six of us - I think - might be less this year ! So we have to back it up with the local RCMP and Cadets to the Cenotaph- then it's back to the Legion Hall for hot rum and lunch

We here in the colony, conduct Remembrance Day ceremonies on the 11th Day of the 11th Month at the 11th hour.

Forum members....How about the other Commonwealth countries?

I am curious as to when and why the date was moved from Nov 11th?

In Hornchurch we have a small service at the wargraves at 11am on the 11th November and a full parade the following Sunday, as per the official Festival of Remembrance. This year it is the 14th.
The following Sunday, 21st, a few of our members usually go to the AJEX ceremony in Romford.
This year though a few other (veteran) members will be attending the RTR parade at Horseguards on 21st.

Whilst on the subject of Remembrance Sundays, I felt I just had to show you the image below.

It was taken on the 2001 AJEX parade and we were marching back after the ceremony at the Cenotaph.

I spotted this lady with her banner and so I whipped out my camera and quickly took this photo whilst we were actually on the march.

I've no idea as to who she was or whether or not the medals were her own and yes..... I do know that she was wearing them on the correct side if they were her own.

At the time I wrote to the Jewish Chronicle in an endeavour to find out more but the letter was never published.

Either way, it was a lovely thing to have witnessed and I am so glad I grabbed a picture

 

me and my grandad always watched this together, I have made a concerted effort to make sure I watch it every single time, so i shall be on the look out

There are ceremonies on the 11th, actually it's better for me when Remembrance day does not fall on the 11th. There was a petition last year or so to get a public holiday on the 11th, but knowing the way our society is heading it would end up as a pre-christmas shopping day. The second Sunday arrangement suite me fine, most years.

 

I will be in Milan, church and then a service at the Milan War Cemetery.

First one in Italy, looking forward to it.

 

As always, I shall attend the service at The Air Forces Memorial, Runnymede.

 

Do you observe silence on the Sunday or the 11th or both? Just realised i never knew, i always did both
