Could we not be more democratic re this subject and have a vote / poll?

Are you saying that I should not remember the loss of my father on this forum?

    Peter me old chum.
    I'm not saying that.
The 'Remembering Today' bit of the forum was specifically set up by us for the casualty mentioned on the Portal with data choosen by Geoff's bit of wizardry.

    That was all.

It wasnt intended for anything else but that one casualty remembered on that day.

See I knew it'd get taken wrong way & people would get upset.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them - except on WW2 Talk it seems.

    OK I give up.
I tried to explain it clearly .
    Do what you want.

I've had enough of the forum anyway.
    Been here too long.

I've only just latched on this thread and perhaps I am totally missing the point, but surely if a post is of no interest to a particular person they can just simply skip passed it. I for one and I am sure many on the others on the forum just read the posts that interest them or form part of any research they are carrying out.We all have our own agenda's for being here and if the the 'Remembering Today' generates and interest for members of the forum, then surely its validity to be here, has been validated. Just a thought.

Me too. If I'd known the idea would be misunderstood, I would not have started it.

But - as they say - somebody's got to do it. I think you do it well.

I think it's a good idea and I'm glad the forum has this feature.

To quote our esteemed Prime Minister - "There is no such thing as society". Oh, wait, wrong one, I meant - "Chillax people!"

    I do not understand.

How would concentrating Remembering Today type posts into an appropriate thread somehow be an insult to the dead?

When has this forum ever curtailed remembrance?

    Ever? Really?

I don't understand annoyance when someone muses that the smooth functioning of an Internet forum might be enhanced with a little more careful placement of such notices.

    Maybe they have a point.
And I very much doubt they're offering any offence.

Most of the 'Remembering Today' threads are orphaned single-post affairs with the plain CWGC info.
Maybe that info would be far more useful to passing browsers when placed into a thread which also contains other information based on Unit, Cemetery, Theatre, whatever, or any other list centred around some context.

There's a difference between someone popping in a thread remembering a family member, and these threads which have piqued interest here. Seems a fairly obvious difference to me and I doubt anyone would, or has, objected to those family threads, but if your interest is in a particular formation etc. it seems quite logical to me to concentrate those notices, as some have done.

The main issue of passing interest for me here, is how a slew of remembering Today threads can push other threads off the Portal list, and the Portal list is our main landing page for browsers and members alike. Residence there is the strongest hope for any thread to get decent responses, and the RT posts will likely always be found by specific Googling anyway.

It wouldn't even be entirely illogical to concentrate all such 'Killed Today' things into one thread, and then lift out names that 'catch on' into separate threads if the discussion starts to build on a particular casualty.
Didn't we used to have such a thread from before Geoff compiled the data and slipped me the code for the 'Remembering Today' box? I'm sure we did.

Anyway - I've avoided the subject and this thread like the plague, as I didn't want to open the inevitable box of spiders, but Owen being tipped into mod-bailing is a biggie for me, him being probably the busiest person involved in the site's day-to-day running and one of the firmest friends WW2T ever had (the big girly quitter :p), so I've chipped in.

There's no need to get too passionate about this subject, it being more of a question of 'site-shape'. And I can't really see how a Remembering Today post in a contextual thread is somehow less respectful than in a single post. I wonder if it might just enhance the concentration, and therefore dissemination, of information; which is likely our main raison d'etre.

Having read some of the comments I am going to pass on this one.
TD asked if I have searched to avoid doubling up: easier said than done it seems.
There are so many varying views on what to remember and why.
Most of the relatives I am in touch with welcome the official details but some families are it seems still a little traumatised by it, especially if there might be gory details revealed in correspondence or reports which I would never repeat or put into text. These were usually written in times of severe stress.
I would want to look them in the eyes before showing them some of the records I have come across.
They might look and seem to be a rare insight into the realities of war but that is not for everyone.
I think it depends on the thread, Remembering Today suggests in Memoriam and may be viewed for emotional reasons.
There are other threads in which to provide the details or circumstances which those of a sensitive disposition can choose to avoid.

No point dragging this old thread up.
Geoff's Search Engine generated Remembering Today threads are part of the forum history.

    We don't do them anymore.

    Well, just one more time.

A certain party has recently combed through all the old 'limited-info' 'Remembering Today' threads in an effort to ensure they're at least accurate and might hold that ethereal 'passing Googler' side-effect. (I say recently... Years of checking, really.)

A substantial (understatement) amount of issues found.
Transcription errors, wrong units, wrong person, wrong day (ironically) etc.
    Now corrected.

I only mention this strange piece of forum history and background noodling as accuracy is so important if the stated casualty might raise the hopes of someone looking them up.
Very much worth double-checking the details over just C&P.

(Will leave this thread closed. Just a bit of info about old strangeness.)
