These shots just get better and better. The two above are very much up my street again, nice to see more shots of US armour training than the usual suspects.
The Hummel picture looks like it's at one of the dumps of enemy (and damaged allied) vehicles scattered over Europe at war's end, there's many more German vehicles in the background & some exceptionally clear camouflage patterns for a black & white shot.

Presumably the plane (type?) was destroyed on the ground.

And good clear shots of King Tiger's (as distinct from the 'tiger' written on the back) aren't exactly common, looks like it might be in the rather rare 'ambush' pattern too. As for the sheer amount of propellant behind that shell... :

Well things are being tied up nice and tight now. Thanks for that 8th AD site Owen. I've taken a hand drawn map of 130 Ord Bn from there. Showing their route from Tidworth (Xmas dinner) to Göttingen via, wait for it, Wattenstedt (H. Göering Works). So Jeffreys grandfathers unit passed through the place. It follows that he picks up a few souvenirs of his travels, maybe a photo album from the offices of the Reichswerke AG Herman Göring. I think that explanation stands muster. That is the full MMO, means, motive and opportunity. An open and shut case.

Not my field, but I reckon that the plane is a Dornier Do 215B.

Thank you all so very much!!!!! I dont know what to say!!!! This is the BEST couple of days I have had in a long time!!!!!!! I cant wait to read everything you all have found for us. Thanks for your time and effort, and take pride in the fact that you helped a 7 year old boy understand what his Great Grandfather did for the allied effort.

Alright, you have to tell us the story. Why Bus?

The name Bus came from his High School football teamates. He was built like a bus and could run through anybody!!! We are from a small farming town in missouri and he would run everyday from the farm to school while everyone else rode their horses. There is a picture here somewhere of him right before he got shipped off without his shirt on, Ic ould only wish I looked like that when I was his age!

The aircraft is certainly a Dornier. It could be a Dornier 217 or Dornier 317.

You sure have got your work cut out explaining some of this stuff. Poor kid, anyway it will wait until he is old enough to explain about Nazis, slave labour and the rest. It is enough just to be thankful that he served his country well and drove his Sherman tank across Europe and came back in one piece.
I am really enjoying this thread. Thank you Jeffrey.

    cheers,

I know this tread is OLD, but I just wanted to share a quick update. I am an interpreter by trade, and today I was working a seminar at the local jewish comunity center. After the workshop was over, i approchaed the woman that led the seminar and along with a survivor, I was able to go thru my picture with them! With the knowledge that I learned from you all here, i was able to have a great conversation with them! At the end when the survivor thanked me for my Grandfathers service, I cant really explain how that made me feel!

Thanks again to all here for the help!
