Make Grave (and other) Photographs searchable.

    Evening chaps,
Just a note that if inserting a Grave photograph could I ask that people also remember to enter the Name recorded as Text alongside the photo (and any other details if you have time, but at least the name).

The reason being that a photograph isn't really searchable on Google, but a name may make the picture findable for a family member, researcher, or old comrade Googling that individual's name. We've got quite a few that are a picture with no additional text.

The same goes to some extent for any other photograph or document that may have relevant text written on it. Well worth transcription so the search engines can pick up on it. Hopefully it greatly increases the chance of someone pottering along one day that can add more.

    Cheers,
    Adam.

To give you an idea what we mean:

Pte Archibald Frederick Ferrell, 7th Bn Hampshire Regiment, KIA 31st July 1944. Buried St Charles de Percy War Cemetery. Son of George and Jane Ferrell, of Hampstead, London.

It doesn't have to be exactly in this format - this is to give you an idea. The more info you put down, the more will be accessible via Google.

    Adam/Paul,

Really good advice to all. I have searched lately for some elusive items and this forum site is often picked up, so the Google search engine really does work.

    Should help lots of searches.

    Regards
    Tom

Is it reasonable to have some repository on this site for grave photos, or is this redundant given what CWGC is trying to do? I appreciated the shots you did for me, Tom, and hope to return the favour to others as I am able. I really resist paying for the CWGC shots. I am trying to collect the 653 from our cenotaph, and that would be prohibitive to do. I see that others are on the same mission. How can we serve each other in a way that will then be of most benefit to others.

This is a very good start. Great idea

I had one other thought and that is whether or not you gents think that anyone might be interested in the panels of the Halifax Memorial. I can post them some time if you think it might be of interest to the wider e-world.

    That would be great, thanks.
Start a thread and add some text that Search Engines can find relating to it.

I will do a little editing of the shots and then post them. It may not be until the new year when I can get at it, but it is on my list to get done.

    Adam,

I am encountering problems loading headstone images into Private Messages, I am prompted for the image URL (stored on my laptop) do I have to create my own web page or is there a central depository on this site as mentioned by Phil (Military Cross) I have created a few albums agains my CP on this site and posted links via PM to the interested members but I am not sure if the albums are searchable (I have created them as public). My immediate problem is I have a bunch of headstone pics I now wish to send to a Forum member but I don't know how to achieve this now my albums are close to maximum images. Grateful for you advice.

    Kind regards
    Barry

    Hi Barry,
I think you may be best to open a photobucket account (or similar), or perhaps upload them onto a thread here when your album's full? (feel free to start a thread solely for such pics if you need to, or use this one, we're not too fussy when it's genuine WW2 stuff being done).

I could expand the album limits, but with so many members this could potentially increase strain on the site in a way that's hard to monitor.

Edit - Just had a thought, total attachments per user are limited, it's a largish limit but there is one - Photobucket's probably the best option for general picture sharing.

Bit of advice please.. Im spending quite a little time in graveyards lately which is worrying the mrs...but thats another matter..Im sending pics to individuals by email and hope your getting em. Question?? Ispent 2 hours yesterday in a large one searching for an RMP. I eventually was given a lift by the cemetary manager and with help of 2 other grave staff we found it. The problem being cwg info was totally incorrect and sraff scratched heads when I showed them . Ive found this info wrong a few times. Doesnt help if not a cwg stone. But question is..should I inform cwg or will they take umbridge and think Im checking up on their hard work??

Don't hesitate to send them an e-mail if there is a mistake.

Regarding the non CWGC headstones, it was not until I queried the state of a grave in my local cemetery and found out that as the family elected not to have a CWGC headstone, sadly they cannot do anything to help tidy it up.

    Pictures by Hystfield - Photobucket
and Pictures by gdha - Photobucket
I am attempting to do all of Staffordshire and Gloucestershire [Staffs is where I live and Glos in my birth county [Berkeley is my home town]
I must give Photobucket a plug. It is one of the best sites to hold photographs. They never get deleted if you do not use the site and you can have more than one account. The other place I post my war graves in on the site called "Find a grave" Once you get the hang of it, it another source to hold your photo's

I had a great response from the folks at the Canadian Virtual Memorial when Dave couldn't find a chap in either cemetery of the Belgian town he was supposedly buried in. Dave found him 30 km away in the graveyard the CWGC said he was in.

However, I have heard others experience a line attributed to Pontius Pilate: "What is written stays written."

I would be interested to hear of others experiences in this area.

    cheers,

    Phil,

I will be contacting CWGC this coming week about a man who is commemorated on the wrong memorial, indeed on the wrong continent, and I have had records amended for relatives, having their NOK included and getting brothers linked.

I am led to believe by another member who has had multiple dealings with CWGC, that it is open to having such errors corrected. As Ramacal says, it is ALWAYS worth contacting CWGC by email, you might get a 'no' response: but, with the right evidence and documentation, how can you fail?

This shouldn't be as difficult as getting a non-commemorated casualty added. CWGC is bound to know of some mistakes already and I have read that costs prohibit changing some stones/panels straight away. However, the online RoH could be updated almost immediately, should they accept that correction is required ...

I absolutely agree, Diane, that errors when you have evidence to back it up, are worth pointing out.

Simple mathematics makes errors a foregone conclusion to an effort of such magnitude. Even in our little town, with only 563 on the cenotaph, there are errors. What is interesting in our little church is that we have 37 commemorated on the walls from the last century of fighting. Five guys names are wrong and one guy did not die, but his cousin did. And it is just the usual sloppiness of a Mc becoming a Mac, a Livingston becoming a Livingston, etc. Who but some of us who care know and at what price, as you point out, do corrections be made, or simply lived with.

I guess if it were my family member, and the name was wrong, I would be at least grateful that the effort was made to honour the sacrifice.

Blessings in the new year ahead -- may all your research be fruitful.

    another question.
have almost done the maesteg cemetery. 32 in all.
what about the CWGC Grave web site, do they look on here and take copys of the graves, or do we need to send them to them too.

We're not officially affiliated with any other site carrying Grave Photographs Mahratta, you'd need to contact other people directly.

The British War Graves collect all British Graves but only if you complete the whole cemetery. However I contacted them the other week after starting to photograph all of the cemeteries in Leeds. I got a reply from them that was pleasant enough but the email contained a guide on how they wanted you to take the photographs which said don't go on a sunny day (In Leeds it either raining or sunny and I ain't going in the rain) and another one was to get down level with the headstone with would mean unless you was vertically challenged you would need to squat or get down on your knees. As anyone will tell you one or two is ok but after doing a few like that you feel the pain for a couple of days after !

What seemed a good idea at the time has now transpired into a bad idea.

    Cheers
