Hi, I am trying to interoperate my father's Army service records, He was a Driver in the Royal Army Service Corp. and have one or two questions: His first posting on 13 Nov 1943 was to "904 A.A. (M) Coy. RASC". Can anyone tell me more about this unit and what his duties may have been? On 30 Mar 1944 he was posted to "361 A.A. Epping (M) Tpt. Coy. RASC". Again any info on this unit and duties? Thanks, Dave.

Hi Dave and welcome to the forum,

There are a couple of Artillery Nuts of the forum so it may be helpful to add 'Royal Artillery' to your title to catch their attention.

I'm assuming that they are Anti Aircraft units that he was attached to as a driver but if that is the case I'm unsure why they have listed a Company rather than a Battery in the unit title.

    Good Luck with your search
    Andy

    Dave,
Hello and welcome to the forum.

I cannot find the abbreviation Tpt on my list that came with my fathers records recently.

We do have a link called abbreviations that you can click on and see if you can come up with a hit.

You can find it by clicking on Portal, then clicking on Military abbreviations in the left hand column under WW2 Talk.

    Regards
    Tom

Hi Andy and Tom, Thanks for your replies. I seem to think that my Dad told me that he was employed on transporting ammunition for the AA guns in Epping, so would this mean he would have been attached to an Artillery unit? Also, after he went over to Normandy on 30 June 44 he was employed on transporting bailey bridges in Holland and Germany. Cheers, Dave.

    Tom,

Tpt is transport- I'm guessing its a Transport Company of the RASC attached to an AA unit to provide them with all their movement requirements.

That now makes me wonder if the first part of the unit is a RA or RASC unit?

    Regards
    Andy

Hi All, here is a photo of my Dad which shows what I now know are his Formation Badges. The upper one is a Shield with a light coloured cross on a darker background and having had a look at a website showing the various Formation Badges I cannot see this actual shield? Most have s sword or other item within the cross, this one looks to be just the plain light coloued cross? Below the shield tis his Arm of Service Strip - RASC I presume (Yellow/Blue). Dave.

Here you go Dave. I hope you don't mind me taking the liberty?

I think its a 21st Army Group Badge but some have swords on them so I maybe wrong.

    Andy,

There was a Troop carrying company (TP CG COY) on the list of abbreviations for the RASC.

    TCS -

since time started the term TPt has always meant transport - and transport was the main function of a coy(Company) of the RASC - they handled most lorry carrying goods to the forward areas - even rail TPT as well ! - and as such they were attached to all units at various times - today - ammo - to-morrow - food - next day bridges etc - exactly why they were called a SERVICE corps - now they have gone all posh and are known as "logistics"........ dearie me !

But then Dustbin men are now known as "Sanitation Engineers" so why not ??
    Cheers

    Cheers
