I have no connection whatsoever with D.C. Thomson and "Find My Past" but a weekend means Friday Midday to Monday Midday, apparently. A little while back they were advertising a free fortnight. Terms and conditions must apply.

" We’re having a Free Weekend! Enjoy unlimited access to 4 BILLION records from midday Friday"

Clear your calendars family history lovers, we’re having a free weekend! You’ll be able to explore our 4 billion records (or as many as you can manage!) from midday on Friday, September 18th until midday Monday September 21st (BST)."

Thanks for the heads up. I really recommend searching through the newspaper archives if you have set research topics on the go. I recently did this after advice from another forum member and found 3-4 excellent results.

Just an update on the Newspaper Archive on FMP. With painstaking tenacity I am picking up many articles, obituaries and even the odd photograph of my Chindt 1 soldiers. Several updates on the website and some heart-breaking appeals from the families involved.

I have a subscription and the 1939-1945 casualty records are really useful, as are the Royal Artillery WW2 ORs Attestation records. The newspaper archives are a very helpful too.

Its search engine is much better at finding people with initials as compared to Ancestry.

Unfortunately not the full wack..... there is restricted access.I used to have an annual subscription covering all the records at a reasonable price but now I consider it too expensive.

From time to time offers come up on vouchers but I am not sure that they are what they purport to be .Would certainly take out an annual subscription if it was at a reasonable price.

I'm the same these days Harry. I buy the occasional monthly subscription.

Ancestry have become quite restrictive too on their free weekends. You can't send messages now to other members during a free weekend.

I've only one relative now to find after the 1901 census and can't justify a yearly subscription. I'll be able to download a couple of news articles I'm after tomorrow.

Ancestry military records are free this weekend. Didn't want to start a new thread.

But, this RAF Collection has been added to Find My Past today

    Royal Air Force Lists 1919-1945
Search the Royal Air Force Lists from 1919-1922 and 1938-1945. The Lists contain over 62,000 names and include the women's branches of the military including the WRENs, WAAF, and Princess Mary's Royal Air Force Nursing Service. The records are presented as digitised copies of the original publications. You can search by your ancestor's name and a keyword.

I have just seen that Find My Past are offering a free weekend from noon Friday, 8 November to noon on Monday 11th.

It may be of more use to those looking into WW1 service records, of course, and I do intend to try and find out about my great grandfather if I can trace him from the sketchy information mum has provided me with, but there may be some other useful information available.

Yes, I have only just this second spotted that, funnily enough. Thanks Steve.

Thanks for the alerts, both Wobbler & Steve, and keep 'em coming as I gave up on both their broken RSS news feeds years ago so no longer get told that way.

Now I find FMP have also rendered their website unusable for my browser whilst Ancestry's remains good. Seeing their military theme, I wasn't expecting it but the 1939 Register (E&W) is currently included for free access :D.

Oddly my FMP is letting me see files but not giving any kind of download option - not sure if when they have opened it up for free they want people to look but don't touch and they have done it across the board and not just for non subscribers.

Hmm, I can't remember such detail now FMP is so badly broken but are you perhaps seeing blank space where download buttons used to be? If so, that sounds like you have a similar problem to mine in that your browser simply can't understand their fancy-dancy new Java code well enough to work.

I should have maybe added that Ancestry now nags me about abandoning retro-compatibility for all Internet Explorers - as if Edge is now supposed to have superseded every single version of IE. It also apparently means that their Java code is incapable of recognising my Firefox fork (Pale Moon 26.5) to properly target their warning.

But I'd better stop before this turns into a software engineering rant !
