    Hello
With regards to service numbers. If someone transferred from a line regiment to the RASC, would/could they keep the service number and a prefix be added?
ie Beds and Herts numbered 1234567
    RASC numbered T/1234567

the move possibly being post WW2 if that makes a difference.

    Thanks
    Adam

I've not seen a prefix added to an army service number issued 1920/1942 or the general service corps numbering sequence 1942/49? when a man transferred.

    I stand to be corrected!

    Hi,

I’m not aware of any Regimental block allocation of the eight digit numbering sequence that was adopted for use by all 3 services in the late 1940’s.

The third system of numbering introduced in WW2 numbered conscripts who were sent to a central depot where they had their medicals and were allocated a number BEFORE being posted to a regiment as opposed to joining the Regimental Depots like the old 1920 numbering system. These were known as GSC numbers this was carried forward to the next (1950-2007) numbering system. Your number falls between 24520161 (March 1979) and 24579860 August 1980.

As no one joined The SAS direct you are looking for something which doesn`t exist anyway .There`s no `Regimental` ties with post 1950`s numbering . Sorry . Check your number in the London Gazette he may be listed for a MiD or other honour?

    Good luck

Many thanks indeed.....I was being a tad light hearted re reference to SAS...although, that said, the number appears in a non-standard Brit-used Helmet. I’m better off re info...and I’m grateful.

With the third numbering system introduced in the war of assigning a service number at depot then sending out soldiers to units ad hoc, would anyone know an approximate date of enlistment for the service number block 1457199* please?

I have searched CWGC entries for casualties with numbers in the block and found 14571999 Pte George Whife KIA 21 June 1944 with the 5th Buffs and 14571979 Pte John Stoner KIA 25 Jan 1945 with the 4th Dorsets. both aged 20. I have a relative who i believe was a POW with the E Lancs Regt 14571993 Pte Thomas H Viner but I'm trying to confirm this is the same man as my relative. DOB has him born 1925 so would put him at 18 in 1943. If the enlistment date is prior to that, I think it would be unlikely to be my relative.

I understand the 14000000 block gives the General Service Corps enlistment cap badge but i was wondering if the breakdown of the army number can give a rough enlistment date?

I'd say second half of March 1943, basing this on a number of paybooks I have around that number.

Thank you. If this is my man, it would fit perfectly as he would have been 18 at this point. I'm trying to ascertain when he was captured and what Battalion he served with.

I believe he is Thomas Herbert Viner, born 7 March 1925 In Salford, Manchester. At least that's what my early research says. His father was Herbert Viner (b. 1897) and served with RE light railways around the Middle East in WW1. His mother was Sarah Ann Viner (nee Martin b. 1897).

    Hi Everyone

Here is a simple spreadsheet that returns the regiment/corps of all of the service numbers detailed in the first post. The data it uses is on the second tab.

Just put a service number in cell A1 it will appear in B1.

It is a bit rough, so if anyone sees anything blindingly wrong, let me know.

It could also be modified to work on a list of soldiers, returning the regiment/corps they joined initially.

    Hope this helps

    Gus
