In the early morning of 30 July 1942 the inhabitants of the Belgian villages of Olmen and Balen were woken by a fierce air battle over the town. A German night fighter targeted a Wellington bomber of No.142 Squadron returning from a raid on Saarbrucken. The fight was finally resolved in a victory for German fighter ace Oberleutnant Eckart-Wilhelm von Bonin. The bomber crashed in a meadow near Olmen and immediately caught fire. All six crew members were killed in the crash.

SHAILER, SIDNEY ALAN (age 20). Campsie, New South Wales, Australia. Sergeant (411406). Royal Australian Air Force, (14 OTU RAF - 14 Operational Training Unit Royal Air Force). Plot 12, Row H, Grave 8.
    web-Headstone-SA-Shailer-ph.Michael-vd-Velde.jpg

Hampden Mk.I P1185 (GL-B) of 14 OTU RAF. Lost on combat operations on 1/8/1942. Missing on raid to Dusseldorf. Took off from RAF Cottesmore, Rutland on the evening on 31/74/1942.

Three crew members were killed: two Canadians - the observer, Pilot Officer David G. McLean and the radio operator/air gunner, Flight Sgt George T. Bloomer - as well as Australian, Sgt Sydney Shailer. The third Canadian on board, the pilot Sgt N.E. McGowan, was taken prisoner of war.

It seems the aircraft lost power to one of their engines above Dusseldorf, Germany and came under attack by German night fighter, killing Shailer. The battered aircraft later came under fire by German Anti Aircraft (FLAK) near the cost of Oostende, Belgium and crashed. Some say the Hampden crashed into the Northern Sea, but a statement from a local farmer explains that the aircraft crashed very close to his farm. This is most likely because badly burned bodies were recovered by the Germans and temporary buried in Leffinge Churchyard, Belgium. There are no reports that the bodies washed ashore. The farmer was able to hand over a serial-tag from the aircraft.
