HI, does anybody have access to the above War Diary as I would be interested to find out if any mention is made of L/Cpl W Bourne (KIA) and Dvr J Hunt (Wd) on the 8th April 1945? Cheers, Rick
Hi Rick, Just looking at the CWGC Concentration Records which shows T218066 LCpl Walter Bourne (KIA) on 8 Apr 45. The next line down has a T269211 Dvr James Hunt (Died of Wounds) on 11 Apr 45. Regards Bruneval
Not the answer, but are these the two? T/218066 LANCE CORPORAL WALTER BOURNE Casualty Details | CWGC Note that Hunt was reported in the casualty lists as 'died of wounds'. T/269211 DRIVER JAMES HUNT Casualty Details | CWGC Edit: for info, just noticed another post on Bourne T/218066 L/Cpl W Bourne RASC KIA 8th April 1945
Hi, many thanks guys, I don't think I can get much more info other than requesting his papers. I thought I would drop a post on the war diary section as someone may have a copy of the WD? cheers, Rick
Greetings all, New user here. My grandfather was a driver in 257 Ambulance Car Company and I too am seeking a copy of the unit war diary, preferably from early 1944 onwards. I have obtained my grandfather's service records and Dvr Taylor T/14345124 was posted to 257 Ambulance Car Company wef 31/01/44. My profile pic, is my grandfather (lhs) in St. Ives Cambridgeshire on 06/06/44. From the writing on the rear. He travelled to Tilbury docks & I believe headed to Normandy on 11/06/44, his 32nd birthday. I'd really like to get a better understanding of where he went. I know he served in France, Holland & Germany before being discharged in 1946. If anyone knows anyone who can assist with obtaining the unit war diary, I would be very grateful. Many thanks
Welcome to the forum Rich! The 1944 War Diary for 257 Coy RASC is to be found here: 257 Coy. | The National Archives There are a few members here who offer copying services from the National Archives for very reasonable fee. Sometime in April 1944 the official designation of RASC Companies was harmonised and changed from, say, "xx General Transport Company RASC" to the more logical "xx Company RASC (General Transport)". More logical, because RASC Coys were numbered sequentially regardless of their assigned role, which could change over time. For example, 633 Gen Tpt Coy RASC was not the 633th General Transport Company, but the 633th Company in RASC, which happened to be assigned a General Transport role. Thus "257 Ambulance Car Company RASC" was probably changed to "257 Company RASC (Ambulance Car)" or "257 Coy RASC" for short. Michel
Ask Gary Tankard , PsyWar.Org or Drew5233 . They are the main war diary copiers. One of them may already have it on file.
Thanks for the sage advice thus far. Does anyone already have this: 257 Coy. | The National Archives Or is anyone able to try and obtain a copy in my behalf? Please advise. Ta muchly
Gents, Are any of you able to assist with: 257 Coy. | The National Archives Many thanks in advance. Rich
