Sunday 30th August 1942 Second Officer Charles Cumming (56) [DUNDEE (BALGAY) CEMETERY] The following merchant Navy Officer is listed by CWGC as being associated with the S.S. Hylton and dying on 30th August 1942. That ship was actually sunk on the 29th March 1941 and is noted by uboat.net as resulting in no losses from the 34 crew, 2 gunners and 7 RN personnel (the ship was acting as the Vice Commodore ship to Convoy HX.115 at the time of its loss) onboard. So did 2/O Cumming succumb to injuries sustained in the sinking or was his death due to a non-hostile cause and for some reason CWGC have recorded him under his long lost ship? Any ideas? Regards, Steve
He died at 16 Annfield Row in Dundee on 30 August 1942 of a coronary thrombosis. That is what is written on his death certificate. Not sure at this stage why the CWGC would be involved given the strict remit for MN commemorations. Regards Hugh
