Out for a walk with the dog can't get better than this.

 

Not wildlife but a natural phenomenon “over” our garden a couple of days ago, which grabbed me.

... the "Wolf of Mook"



Although he has been glimpsed several times, only this nocturnal infrared recording exists of this shadowy beast.

 

My God, that wolf is only 18 kilometres from Arnhem…who can stop it now?

I'm afraid Arnhem is surrounded by these scary creatures. There are at least two packs of wolves living in de wooded area to the north of the town. No one dares to venture outside the city gates at night ... a little girl who went to bring her grandmother cookies has been missing for a week

Sheep and goats are a more tame and therefore beloved prey for the wolves. The shepherds in the area have come up with a solution to this: Carpathian Shepherd Dogs



The dogs come from Romania and were brought to the Netherlands especially for this task. They can smell the wolves from far away and scare them away with their growls and barks, but the dogs stay with the herd. Others swear by the Pyrenean Mountain Dogs.

The last known wolf was shot in 1822 near Nijmegen. In 2015 the wolves reappeared in Holland after an absence of nearly 200 years. They drifted in from Eastern Europe.

 

Wow, I had no idea, seriously, that wolves were now so far west again.

 

Kids still take cookies to their grannies in Holland, amazing. Respect still endures.
