Corporal Harry Sykes T/141511 Royal Army Service Corps died 17/12/1942 Age: 23 years Caserta War Cemetery, Italy III, D, 3. Trying to find out how and why he was In Italy at this time, could he have been a prisoner of war Thank you
In casualty lists first reported 'missing', Western Desert 5.6.42, then reported 'missing believed wounded and POW' then reported 'wounded and POW'. finally reported 'now died as POW' Strange I can't find him in POW lists, but others might.
Quote from the CWGC page about Caserta War Cemetery The Royal Palace at Caserta served as headquarters for the Allied armies in Italy for the greater part of the duration of the Italian campaign and the 2nd General Hospital was at Caserta from December 1943 until September 1945. Some of those buried here died in the hospital, others as prisoners of war (there was a POW Hospital at Caserta) before the Allied invasion. Caserta War Cemetery | Cemetery Details | CWGC Originaly buried at Caserta Civil Cemetery. Concentration record here shows a burial every few days in consecutive graves, which could be consistent with deaths in a pow hospital. Corporal Harry Sykes | War Casualty Details | CWGC
They are online but do not give any more information, just a list. British Army Casualty Lists 1939-1945 | findmypast.co.uk
Strange I can't find him in POW lists, but others might Register WO 302 /21 POWs in Italy was compiled in August 1943. Those who died in Italy and were buried before that date don't appear in this register. The best thing is to SEND TO THE INTERNATIONAL RED CROSS - OPENS ON MONDAY 24 JANUARY FOR AN HOUR OR SO - TO GET HIS POW RECORD. Vitellino
Thank you. The page now says no more requests can be accepted until May 2022, I guess there must be hundreds if not thousands of people want information here's hoping
