    Hi guys.
Can anyone shed any light on this please:

Corporal T George 7847212 or 7647212 service number.
Apparently awarded the MM and also has the French Legion D’Honneur (spelling?)

Said to have served in the RAC and later SAS. Any help massively appreciated!

    Alex.

Hello Alex, possible the "MM" you're referencing may be a "Médaille Militaire", which given the Légion D'Honneur connection may point to a chap serving with/from 3rd or 4th (or even 5th) SAS, maybe a French/Belgian national.

    I'll have a dig.

    Kind regards, always,

    Jim.

    Hello Alex,

I'm currently working through the list of Légion D'Honneur recipients (those that died prior to 1977) nom "George".

I may be a while as there are 13,443 possibilities!

And if your chap lived beyond 1977 then It will be an email inquiry.

    Kind regards, always,

    Jim.

Wowsers! Many thanks for your time. They did say he was SAS but they only found that out recently? I didn’t mention that detail initially as I wasn’t sure it would help. Now it seems it might!

    Hello Alex,

Are there any other details that you have that you may be happy to disclose? Asking as I've drawn a blank so far amongst the Légion D'Honneur recipients I've checked through up till now (and I've only been looking at those born after 1890 to narrow the field a bit!)

"Those Who Dared" and "Honour To The Airborne - Part 2" both have no mention, which is why I went down the non-UK National route.

    Kind regards, always,

    Jim.

Just this picture (which isn’t mine) I’ve asked for more details as it’s not very clear.
That’s def the British issue MM it appears.
He died apparently some 20 years ago.

And yes Alex, certainly a Military Medal in the photograph, and not a Médaille Militaire, and certainly appears to be a Légion D'Honneur too.

Plus, given the Africa Star (and no other campaign stars) I looked down the POW route but no joy there with either of the possible service numbers (curiouser and curiouser) hence still searching.

    Kind regards, always,

    Jim.

That is a WW1 MM in the photograph. You probably already knew that, but I thought I would just say.

I've kept an open mind on it till (hopefully) Alex is sent a better quality photograph.

With my eyesight it's hard to differentiate between the Kings under normal circumstances!

    Kind regards, always,

    Jim.

I suppose that still leaves the scope up until January 1936 (George V) Jim, but certainly not a WW2 MM.

    Best wishes

    Only two `T George ` I could find ;-

    Name: Thomas George
    Regimental Number: 608052
Regiment: Royal Horse Artillery and Royal Field Artillery
    Battalion: 20 Brigade
    Rank: Sig
    Medals: Military Medal

    Name: Thomas George
    Regimental Number: 56598
    Regiment: Royal Engineers
    Battalion: 9 Divisional Signal Company
    Rank: Sergeant
    Medals: Military Medal

Looking at the group if its a WW1 award then the accompanying WW1 medals are missing? If its an award between the wars then its relevant campaign medal is missing ? If he died 20 years ago how did he receive the Légion D'Honneur and he has no France and Germany Star ?

    Hi

Looking at it closer and looking here - Military Medal - Wikipedia
It would seem there is no crown on the head so I would assume WW1 (and up to 1930), and the question is where are his other WW1 medals or was it awarded after WW1? A crown pushes the head down in George V and loses the upper torso for George VI.

    regards

Thanks for the info guys, I wasn’t aware of the WW1 medal differences. I did say to Jim I’m starting to think the medals aren’t of genuine issue (well the MM and L d’H at least)

    Hello Kyle,

Initially I didn't discount the possibility that (however extremely thin!) the chap could have been awarded the Légion D'Honneur retrospectively years after the war (the French have been very good in the past at recognising the contribution veterans made, albeit as you say, mostly in connection with the invasion of Normandy and beyond for "regular troops") for service rendered to/for/with the French in North Africa.

And as Alex has said, we had a "conversation" off-thread where veracity of the group was raised, along with the hope of Alex hopefully being provided with a better photograph of said group.

    Kind regards, always,

    Jim.

It might be just the way the Legion d'Honneur has been displayed but the photograph indicates a neck decoration which is that of the rank of Commandeur, way above what a Corporal would receive. The usual award would be that of Chevalier, which has the medal suspended from a ribbon on the left breast (much like the others shown).
