I have been asked by a friend If I would kindly ask here regarding one of her ancestors

    The person in question is
    Trooper Joseph William Helliwell 4756847
    Royal Armoured Corps
150th (10th Bn. The York and Lancaster Regt.) Regt.
Died 12 February 1945 Age 24 years old

Buried at Penistone Stottercliffe cemetery, Yorkshire

We wondered if he was perhaps wounded and died on return to UK ? or maybe the result of an accident ?

Would appreciate any help / advice regarding finding out what happened to him.

Apply for a copy of his Death Certificate which will give the cause of death and place. This can be obtained from the General Register Office and costs about £11

Searching the CWGC Index it is possible to show the 150th (10th Bn. The York and Lancaster Regt.) Regt. was serving in Burma in February 1945, with a small number of dead, including this officer: Casualty Details | CWGC

It might help researching what the unit was doing in 1944-1945; assuming this is possible online.

She has made no mention of Newton and Lancashire in our chats will ask if she knows anything, ? most of her family appear to be Yorkshire

That is really Interesting regarding the movements of the unit - my friend needs that death certificate for a starting point

The death cert is the starting point giving the reason for death followed by the service records to show his service timeline everything else will be speculation until you have them. Then you can look into the war diaries for his regiment.

From experience (and also knowing the area), the Registration District of Newton, Lancashire for that time refers to an area that no longer exists by that name, which is just North East of Manchester City centre (roughly where Manchester City's Etihad Stadium is located).
I think there were a couple of hospitals that fell under that District but one of them was Monsall Hospital (which closed in the 90's) which was known as a 'fever' or hospital for infectious diseases.

Wait and see what the DC shows, but there's a fair chance he died whilst in hospital there.
