Hello, I live in Australia and trying to do some research on my family tree (completely new at this). Thomas Arthur Wilmott is on one of our birth certificates. It has his occupation as a Sergeant in the Grenadier Guards no. 2619482 in 1943 I was wondering if someone can help or point me in the right direction to find any information. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Paul
There is only one route, and that is his official service records: Get a copy of military service records: Apply for the records of someone who's deceased - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk) Confidentiality issues restrict the amount of personal information so unlikely to find anything on the web, you will need a copy of his death certificate.
Thanks for the reply Tony. I have found that site, unfortunately I have no idea when he died let alone a death certificate. Thanks Paul
Apart from his name and service number what else do you have?, middle initial of A means ?, any idea of his age or date of birth, he was presumably born in the UK or where? Any extra details would help resolve your query TD Is it Wilmott or Willmott? Does anyone know if he married, if so whats the wifes names Maybe contact the Grenadier Gazette, someone could perhaps check details - Grenadier Gazette - Grenadier Guards Find a Grenadier Ancestor - Grenadier Guards There should be Regimental archives albeit it says that service records are at MOD Army Personnel Centre, Glasgow

Thanks TD, I appreciate your time and effort. I was trying to find his birth details and even buy his birth certificate. Nothing come up for our family spelling Wilmott, and in 1913, but Willmott (EXTRA L) comes up in 1914. Incorrect spelling common I imagine. He is my Grandad and I know very little. He left Nan when my Dad was about 3, took Dads brother Roy (few yrs older) Wilmott with him. Dad never followed it up and never knew his Dad or brother. Dad joined the Navy and ended up moving here to Australia. This site helped me learn about Nans brother in ww2 and the battle that took his life. Thanks for your help guys.
There are something like 14 trees on Ancestry which include Thomas but some only show his first marriage, some only show his second, and as is usual many are just 'click and accept' details from other trees without checking details So if you do look through suggest you be selective - some of the trees are private therefore you would need to join/subscribe to Ancestry before you can contact some tree owners directly You may already know this but just trying to cover bases TD
There is a will here for a Thomas Arthur WILMOTT who died 12 Jan 1996. Probate in Manchester, so right half of England. Costs £ 1.50 & arrives online in about 2 weeks. Find a will | GOV.UK
Thanks TD , I am on ancestry and have been reluctant to add people without some documentation to back it up. I expect to subscribe when I have filled in as much as I can.
