Henry / Harry Foxall 14788737 Burma

Hi, totally new here, trying to find some info on my great uncle, we've found some paperwork of his, a Northamptonshire regiment button and a black beret with a queen's own royal Glasgow yeomanry badge on it. We believe he was in Burma as he bought back a Japanese officers sword my dad used to play with as a kid. Any info would be great. His dog tag has the number 14788737 on it. TIA

First point of call is to get his service records
Get a copy of military service records

A long wait currently so read the detail
You will not find his records on pay for sites on the internet

Once you can confirm which regiment he served in then you can get the war diaries. A couple of members on the forum offer a copy service at a reasonable rate. They use the National Archives at Kew

You will need the service records to confirm further.

The army number: 14788737 indicates that the soldier's original unit or date joined was:


"General Service Corps"

Seems the Queens Own Glasgow Yeomanry in WW2 was 2 x anti tank regiments (54th & 64th) and both of these it appears where Europe based

Looking at details for Northamptonshire Regiment the 1st battalion were in the Burma campaign

So definitely would appear you will need his service records

Yes, I'm not at all sure why he has thar cap in his stash. Hopefully we can find out. He never spoke of the war.

 

Any chance you could post up some images of the paperwork? it may give some clues, also any photos of him in uniform? again there may be little details that well practiced eyes can pick out.

Odd that the Glasgow Yeomanry badge is on a black beret, as far as I know during the war they didn't wear Black Berets - that could possibly tie in to post 1947 when they became part of the Royal Armoured Corps as a TA unit - after the War did he serve with the TA?

Is it possible to get a photo of the full beret? are there any markings on the inside? there is a line of stitching that is confusing me a bit, also how the badge is attached looks a bit odd, cheers

Hi I've been doing some digging and have found out this info on my great uncle Harry. Some more pics which confirmed he was Northamptonshire regiment. Is he a corporal in the pic as I see 2 stripes?

#7 is not a beret it looks like a forage cap #'10 and #14 definitely a forage cap some countries call them side caps.
1st Northants were in Burma my relative came home getting married in Jungle Greens wearing a slouch hat like the Chindits wore.
They were at Imphal with 32 Indian Infantry Brigade amongst other actions.
Sorry its a damaged photo taken at his wedding when he came back.

A bit cheeky but I mentioned him on another post about his cousin my Uncle Bill recently. He was at Dunkirk with the 5th Northants and went down with the hospital ship he was a stretcher bearer not wounded. He learned to swim in Swansea Docks so was able to swim away to be picked up by a French Trawler which took him home. He was with a Searchlight Regiment for a while and was awarded a Life Saving Medal for rescuing a young girl from a river. He was then sent to the 1st Northants and off to India. His older cousin (Bill from Bristol) was a signaller in the 1st Wilts and at 14th Army HQ for a while, fighting in the same area but they never met.

 

Your uncle Bill was at Dunkirk?
