    Coronapocalypse in Holland
" ... a pandemic with no end date"

Weekly update (week 29 Sept - 6 Aug):
the curve gets steeper. In Holland the number of people with established COVID-19 is rising fast. Last week 43.903 new cases were established (compared to 27.485 the week before). The R-factor is 1,17. In the past week 1.134 patients have been hospitalized for COVID-19 (again a growth in numbers; the week before stood at 802); last week 150 people died of COVID (was 89).

This evening the Dutch government will announce further restrictions - which will bring the country into a semi-lock down for four weeks at least. The situation in some parts of the country - especially Amsterdam - is considered very serious.

Meanwhile it is also clear that the disease for young people is by no means the innocent flu that activists like to make of it. Many, also young patients, even after a mild Covid infection, still suffer with debilitating and chronic complaints such as extreme fatigue, headache, shortness of breath, chest pain and heart disease. Many suffer from memory loss and loss of concentration ability.

    Numbers now are:
week 1 - 7 July: 19 new deaths, total now 6.132; number of confirmed cases 50.705
week 8 - 14 July: 8 deaths, total now 6.140; number of confirmed cases 51.239
week 14 - 21 July: 7 deaths, total now 6.147; number of confirmed cases 52.226
week 21 - 28 July: 9 deaths, total bow 6.156; number of confirmed cases 53.555
week 28 July - 4 Aug: 6 deaths, total now 6.162; number of confirmed cases 56.143
week 5 - 11 Aug: 9 deaths, total now 6.171; number of confirmed cases 60.179
week 11 - 18 Aug: 16 deaths, total now 6.187; number of confirmed cases 64.192
week 18 - 25 Aug: 32 deaths, total now 6.219; number of confirmed cases 67.780.
week 26 Aug - 1 Sept: 24 deaths, total now 6.234; number of conformed cases 71.359.
week 2 - 8 Sept: 17 deaths, total now 6.251; number of confirmed cases 76.786.
week 8 - 15 Sept: 14 deaths, total now 6.265; number of confirmed cases 85.051.
week 15 - 22 Sept: 33 deaths, total now 6.298; number of confirmed cases 98.468
week 22 - 29 Sept: 102 deaths, total now 6.400; number of confirmed cases 117.795
week 29 Sept - 6 Oct: 89 deaths, total now 6.489; number of confirmed cases 145.280
    week 6 - 13 Oct : 150 deaths, total now 6.639; number of confirmed cases 189.183.

For comparison the (official) mortality rate caused by Covid per million of inhabitants:
(based on the deaths registered by the John Hopkins University)

    Belgium
(11,4 mln) with 10.211 deaths, it is 895,70
Spain (46,7 mln), with 33.124 deaths, is 709,29
USA (327,2 mln) with 215.101 deaths, it is 657,40
UK (66,5 mln) this number, with 42.965 deaths, is 646,09
Italy (60,4 mln) with 36.205 deaths, the number is 599,42
Sweden (10,2 mln) with 5.899 deaths is 578,33
France (67,0 mln) with 32.703 deaths, is 488,10
Holland (17,2 mln) with 6.639 deaths, it now is 385,99
Canada (37,1 mln) with 9.680 deaths is 260,92
Germany (82,9 mln) with 9.649 deaths is 116,39

Population numbers (courtesy SteveDee) Coronavirus deaths per million by country 2020 | Statista. Some countries - like Belgium - include suspected Covid deaths that were not tested. The official corona mortality of various countries is therefore less comparable.

Belgium still is the relatively hardest hit country in Europe and maybe world-wide (a sky-high death rate of 895+ per million inhabitants) - but Belgium has been very strict with itself. It counts not only deaths after a positive test, but also of those who showed symptoms that indicate the virus; something other countries often don't do, which embellishes their statistics. Spain and the USA make a good second and third. The rates in Sweden, the only country in Europe that gambled for group immunity and decided not to lock down, are now slowly approaching the Italian rate. Germany, where the virus spread at the same time as in Holland, is doing extremely well. The country has a more disciplined population and does a lot of testing, contact tracing and isolating.

What I took from reading your link was the WHO advising that lockdowns are so costly that it should only be seen as a weapon of first defense against spreading the virus while testing, contract tracing and public mask wearing/distancing procedures are implemented. Like China did. The rest of the world didn't. So here we are.

Implementation takes enforcement. Otherwise it's just a suggestion. Either way, testing and tracing didn't happen. In the US, letting it burn through is the course of (ln)action chosen, implemented and currently being promoted by our administration.

We are having the mortar around one of our chimney pots redone after the jackdaws spent all summer breaking and entering. The builders have packed up for the day, telling me that they have covered the chimney pot in case there is a frost tonight. Once they had gone, I took the dog for a walk, only to find two elderly neighbours, both spinsters, had feinted simultaneously in the lane overlooking our house. I have no idea why.

Am I the only person in here that hasn't used Zoom ?

Keep hearing on radio & tv how we all been using it.

    Well I haven't.
Maybe because I have a job that doesn't require it.

Belgium is imposing what seems like almost a total lockdown from Monday...Deliberately timed of course in the land of Merckx to allow the postponed Ronde van Vlaanderen to go ahead. We have 'Code Red'. Hospitals are cancelling operations but the most important thing is that a couple of hundred lycra-clad junkies and hangers-on in badly driven estate cars can spit and shout half way round the country throwing litter and closing roads as they go. Bloody disgraceful...and we as a family of four are allowed to have contact with one person in total. Just as long as the over-paid prima-donnas and coke-snorting footballers can carry on as usual, that's all right then. Angry ? You could sat that.

I'm with you Owen. I've avoided the dreaded zoom meetings at work, pointing to my poor computer set up in my off campus location. Pleased to have not partaking. Retirement is on my mind these days, so I'm trying to avoid any new tech or procedures. :)

We're having a Zoom party for my brother to celebrate him turning 70. Great way to connect. We'll pass some family lore on to the next generation. Better than sending an ecard. And I see my grandkids with FaceTime. Welcome to the future. In some ways better than the past.

That is the one big plus point of zoom. I can see it would have been and might be again, the best way to keep in touch with the family during these difficult times, especially those who may well have to shield once again.

I did the 'Ronde van Vlaanderen' a couple of years ago on my racing-bike ;). Liked the challenge of the 'Muur van Geraardsbergen' ... wasn't amused by the cobbles ...

Don't be annoyed .. our King Willem-Alexander decided last week to have a holidays in Greece, after the Dutch people had been all (semi) locked-down by our government, with the advice to act wise and the appeal not to go abroad during the autumn holidays. "Travel as little as possible" was the advice. Or in the words of our prime-minister: “Don't be that stubborn person who pushes the boundaries of the rules. Be that realistic Dutch person who stands up and takes responsibility when it comes down to it. And that is now ”

After a storm of criticism, a startled 'King Willy' has decided to cut off his vacation - the dork; as if the damage hasn't already been done.

Does our royal family have a tendency to flee the country in times of crisis .... whatever - next year we hopefully will be voting for a President. :bye:
