    Hi all,

I am having trouble finding information on my grandmother, Hilda Mary Robbins.

When she died in 1982 she left next to no information about her service. My mother would like to request her records from Kew, but until we have more information that's obviously not going to happen. We've tried several avenues, but to no avail.

At this point the only information we have is that she was training in Leicester in June 1944 and by Christmas 1944 she was stationed in Cwmafan, near Port Talbot. Other than that we have nothing, not even a service number.

I would be really appreciative if anyone out there could point us in the right direction. Where should we be looking?

    Thank you

You need to obtain their service records from Glasgow, check out this link for the forms. You should be able to get them with just her name and date of birth. I'll check the ancestry records to see if I can find her military number.

Request records of deceased service personnel

What's her date of birth and place of birth? Also what was her name when she enlisted?

If she was born less than 117 years ago its best to include her death certificate with the application. Due to covid & the number of extra people researching family history during lockdown an unofficial estimate of the time it will take to get her records is 12-24 months, so the earlier you apply the higher up the queue you are. As payment is by cheque some applicants are now not dating the cheque they send to save having to keep send fresh cheques.

Thanks for the advice everyone. We recently discovered some papers and photographs in amongst my late Aunts effects which has shed more light on my Nan's service, but has shown exactly how wrong I was with my assumptions.

Unsure. I know Margam was which isn't too far from Cwmafan.
