    Coronapocalypse in Holland
" ... the virus is not done with us"

    Weekly update (week 18 - 25 Aug):
The number of people with established COVID-19 steadily rises. The alarming figures of the last two weeks (with 4.000+ new infections per week) have served as a wake-up call and has increased awareness that behavior needs to be adjusted. As a result last week 3.588 new individuals were reported who tested positive for COVID-19. That is 425 less than the week before. Hopefully this downward trend continues, otherwise a second lockdown might be in the offing. Hospitalizations and deaths have increased. In the past week, 84 patients have been hospitalized for COVID-19. There were 32 COVID-deaths.

Meanwhile it is also clear that the disease for young people is by no means the innocent flu that activists like to make of it: the Dutch Facebook group "Corona patients with long-term complaints" counts more than 14 thousand members now. These are often younger ex-patients, who, even after mild Covid complaints, still suffer with debilitating complaints such as extreme fatigue, headache, shortness of breath and memory loss. First cases in Holland an d Belgium are confirmed of people who got infected a second time some of these died. So far for immunity then.

    Numbers now are:
week 1 - 7 July: 19 new deaths, total now 6.132; number of confirmed cases 50.705
week 8 - 14 July: 8 deaths, total now 6.140; number of confirmed cases 51.239
week 14 - 21 July: 7 deaths, total now 6.147; number of confirmed cases 52.226
week 21 - 28 July: 9 deaths, total bow 6.156; number of confirmed cases 53.555
week 28 July - 4 Aug: 6 deaths, total now 6.162; number of confirmed cases 56.143
week 5 - 11 Aug: 9 deaths, total now 6.171; number of confirmed cases 60.179
week 11 - 18 Aug: 16 deaths, total now 6.187; number of confirmed cases 64.192
week 18 - 25 Aug: 32 deaths, total now 6.219; number of confirmed cases 67.780.

For comparison the (official) mortality rate caused by Covid per million of inhabitants:
(based on the deaths registered by the John Hopkins University)

    Belgium
(11,4 mln) with 9.996 deaths, it is 876,84
UK (66,5 mln) this number, with 41.519 deaths, is 624,35
Spain (46,7 mln), with 28.872 deaths, is 618,24
Italy (60,4 mln) with 35.441 deaths, the number is 586,77
Sweden (10,2 mln) with 5.813 deaths is 569,90
USA (327,2 mln) with 177.279 deaths, it is 541,81
France (67,0 mln) with 30.533 deaths, is 455,72
Holland (17,2 mln) with 6.219 deaths, it now is 361,57
Canada (37,1 mln) with 9.129 deaths is 246,07
Germany (82,9 mln) with 9.281 deaths is 111,95

Population numbers (courtesy SteveDee) Coronavirus deaths per million by country 2020 | Statista. Some countries - like Belgium - include suspected Covid deaths that were not tested. The official corona mortality of various countries is therefore less comparable.

Belgium still is the relatively hardest hit country in Europe and maybe world-wide (a sky-high death rate of 876+ per million inhabitants - but Belgium has been very strict with itself. It counts not only deaths after a positive test, but also of those who showed symptoms that indicate the virus. The UK and Spain make a good second and third.
The rates in Sweden, the only country in Europe that gambled for group immunity and decided not to lock down, are now almost up to the Italian rates.
The deaths in the USA are now fast on the rise (approx. 1.000 a day). The death rate now is well beyond that of France. Is the US heading for a Swedish/Italian scenario? If so, this will mean a number of 180.000 - 190.000 deaths.
Germany, where the virus spread at the same time as in Holland, is doing extremely well. The country has a more disciplined population and does a lot of testing, contact tracing and isolating

Not so impressed by a doctor title myself. My wife had a doctor (not for long)who believed in giving a breast exam for any visit. An Army doctor pulled shrapnel from my dad butt, then pulled dad off the front line and into the doctors unit. Decades later that doc testified no proof of cancer by smoking as a witness for the tobacco company.

Lack of a leadership in setting a course sure muddies the battle plan. Unless the war plan at HQ was to let it burn through and reallocate survivors when the fire subsides.

Wear your helmet (mask) is the only order of the day.

Well, this could be a frankly unacceptable interruption to some bloke with a different name's tank book output.
Do Kew or the tank museum have a quarantine wing?

I understand that operations have already trickled to a slow pace on that front, due to archive restrictions. It's a shame, as that fellow has something a bit special lined up.

Thanks for the good wishes everyone, although I am pleased to say that I am (or appear to be) well into the recovery stage now. The experience started off as a particularly draining hangover after a day at my local Spoons, and when the hangover was even worse two days later, I realised that something unusual was afoot. It's certainly makes you feel extremely odd - as though gravity is twice as strong and keeps pressing insistently on your body.
