My grandad was 3rd Carabiniers and not on your list, I’m having difficulty figuring out which squadron he was in, his name was John Rice Mackay.

Thank you for your post. Do you know your grandfather's Army Number and can you add any details regarding his service in India and Burma?

Yep 558369. Arrived in India 1940 and left September 1944. From memory I think he was a ‘scout’, said he used to sit on the front of tanks. He said everyone thought he was crazy as he used to go ahead and snipers used to try pick him off. Of course as a child I didn’t pay too much attention at the time. Il attach is tracer card, we have his records as well but still no clue as to exactly which squadron he was attached too.

Tracer card from bovington. We have never managed to find any mention of him in any of the war diaries or any other document.

Thank you for the update. I cannot read all of the details on the tracer card but it appears to say: Posted 3rd Carabiniers 27/2/1940. India 31/7/1944. Depot U.K. 18/9/1944. I am not sure why he would leave India in July 1944 but it would appear to have taken him about six weeks to get back to the U.K.

Did he come from Newcastle upon Tyne or Morpeth?

My father served in B Squadron, 3 Carabiniers - Roland James Gomm. He was a tank gunner.

Many thanks for posting. I will add him to the list. Do you happen to have his Army Number?

Can I ask why you believe it to be 7944864, is that a figure of speech or is there documentary evidence?

That's the number my brother gave me as he has most of Dad's wartime records, scant as they are. I have no reason to believe its incorrect. Am sure that has to be the number Dad gave him, he always said it was the only number he would never forget!! Dad passed away in 2011.

Another for you, 7892039 David Hopwood, he ended as SQMS in A Squadron - any other info on him would be useful

Many thanks for the information and for posting the pay book picture. I cannot tell you anything else about him but I have added him to the list.

You don't happen to have any paperwork relating to the 1/King's Regiment (Liverpool) do you?

I had a look and I have 4 books to men who have numbers in the Kings block, 1 moved on to other units quickly - the other 3 I don't know, but the odd thing I hadn't noticed before was these 3 all joined on 24/7/40 (the other joined 2 days later) at Wathgill

Thank you for getting back to me. Is it possible that you could post their names and army numbers as there is a slim chance that they may on my 1/King's list?
