Pubs have been shut for a long while, Bobby. And it's taken me a few weeks to get around to a pint.
Sat on my tod on a scorchio day, watching the world go by.
    Lovely.

Yeah the bars have been shut down here too long too. I'm a draft beer man myself, and that pic really appealed to me. The bars opened for about a month until the number of positive tests creeped up, then the governor stepped in and shut them all down again. I can see his point. We're stuck in what is called Phase 2 (of re-opening the economy) here. Phase 2 will run until August 28 and then will be re-evaluated before moving to Phase 3. I think Phase 4 or 5 is normal operations, but I don't see us getting that far for awhile. Hopefully we will be able to do Mardi Gras without restrictions.

We can still buy booze at the supermarkets, gas stations, daiquiri shops (drive thru only), and the liquor stores, and even at the eateries (w/25% max seating capacity) when you order a meal. No, not just a plate of French Fries, an entree and sides. Not quite like the barbarism y'all are enduring, it's more like rationed and structured luxury. Maybe liberty (in the naval shore leave sense) instead of luxury would probably be a better term. Some prepper friends have been hitting their emergency stashes a bit more as well. And one old Army buddy said today (via text) that he and his ole lady are going on the wagon due to their daily happy hours (around their pool). The things we have to go through....

I'm sure that the Mormons in Utah aren't complaining much.

Not only can't you buy booze, but people cannot buy cigarettes either. Black market is booming.

Why is that? Who's running the shit show? Where do you live anyway? Sounds like a dreadful place. Now that is going a bit too far. I smoke stogies and not cigs, but some people gotta have their smokes and I know what the feeling is like. I have an order of about 100 stogies due in by next week. I'll smoke a few for y'all.

I see a jar or two of moonshine at every party or picnic except if it is exclusively northern transplants. Never tried it myself. If I'm going to drink the hard stuff it is going to be bourbon. The jars often have cider and cinnamon added and the stuff is then called 'Apple Pie.'
Some friends of mine once ran a lawn mower on it just to see if it would work.

Old-time moonshine industry thrives on pride, hard work

    Coronapocalypse in Holland

Weekly update (week 28 July - 4 Aug):

The number of people with established COVID-19 infection almost doubled last week. 2,588 new people were reported who tested positive for COVID-19. That is 1,259 more than the number of reports last week. In the past week, 44 patients have been reported who have been hospitalized for COVID-19. That is 21 more than last week. 6 persons have been reported dead.

Meanwhile it is also clear that the disease for young people is by no means the innocent flu that activists like to make of it: the Dutch Facebook group "Corona patients with long-term complaints" counts more than 14 thousand members now. These are often younger ex-patients, who, even after mild Covid complaints, still suffer with debilitating complaints such as extreme fatigue, headache, shortness of breath and memory loss, .

    Numbers now are:
week 1 - 7 July: 19 new deaths, total now 6.132; number of confirmed cases 50.705
week 8 - 14 July: 8 deaths, total now 6.140; number of confirmed cases 51.239
week 14 - 21 July: 7 deaths, total now 6.147; number of confirmed cases 52.226
week 21 - 28 July: 9 deaths, total bow 6.156; number of confirmed cases 53.555
week 28 July - 4 Aug: 6 deaths, total now 6.162; number of confirmed cases 56.143

For comparison the (official) mortality rate caused by Covid per million of inhabitants:
(based on the deaths registered by the John Hopkins University)

    Belgium
(11,4 mln) with 9.866 deaths, it is 865,44
UK (66,5 mln) this number, with 46.596 deaths, is 700,69
Spain (46,7 mln), with 28.503 deaths, is 610,34
Italy (60,4 mln) with 35.190 deaths, the number is 582,62
Sweden (10,2 mln) with 5.763 deaths is 565,00
USA (327,2 mln) with 161.356 deaths, it is 493,14
France (67,0 mln) with 30.327 deaths, is 452,64
Holland (17,2 mln) with 6.162 deaths, it now is 358,26
Canada (37,1 mln) with 9.017 deaths is 243,05
Germany (82,9 mln) with 9.200 deaths is 110,98

Population numbers (courtesy SteveDee) Coronavirus deaths per million by country 2020 | Statista. Some countries - like Belgium - include suspected Covid deaths that were not tested. The official corona mortality of various countries is therefore less comparable.

Belgium is the relatively hardest hit country in Europe and maybe world-wide (a sky-high death rate of 865+ per million inhabitants - but Belgium has been very strict with itself. It counts not only deaths after a positive test, but also of those who showed symptoms that indicate the virus. The UK and Spain make a good second and third.
The rates in Sweden, the only country in Europe that gambled for group immunity and decided not to lock down, are now almost up to the Italian rates.
The deaths in the USA are now fast on the rise (approx. 1.000 a day). Though the rate for the time being is dampened by the large population of the country, I now foresee a Swedish/Italian scenario (with 180.000 - 190.000 deaths).
Germany, where the virus spread at the same time as in Holland, is doing extremely well. The country has a more disciplined population and does a lot of testing, contact tracing and isolating.

Welcome to Africa. Alcohol sales were allowed a few weeks ago. Then the emergency rooms in hospitals got swamped with drunk injuries on top of the increase of covid cases so alcohol was banned again.
Cigarettes have been banned for 4 months now. Logic is covid kills people with compromised lungs. People are still smoking. They just pay an absolute fortune for their nicotine fix.

You should migrate to Australia then.

Don't think so. My brother emigrated 25 years ago and my parents followed 5 years later. Quite happy in South Africa. Australia is like a nanny state.

I remember my father once got a job in North Carolina. They had an illicit brew there called Screaming Purple Jesus, because that was what you saw when you drank it.

To add fuel to the fire just are we are recovering from the virus in Connecticut, we got hit by Tropical Storm Isiasis on Tuesday. Over 650,000 homes were without electricity with downed trees and power lines all over the place. It is Sunday and there are still over 300,000 without power. I was lucky and only lost it for about 21 hours. My daughter was without until late Friday and my niece still does not have power. As they say (Young Frankenstein), it could be worse it could be raining. Oh, that's right, it did rain buckets.
