I go past it several times each month on the way down to the London Irish Rifles HQ..and always glance through the trees to try to glimpse the plaque.

A view of Charles Booth's socio-economic map of the area at the turn of the century always makes interesting reading...granted that the Montgomery family left Kennington in 1889 but it gives you an idea of the environment at the time...

Both of my grandmothers would grow up in the 1880s/1890s within 1/2 mile of the Oval. Monty's family home at the time was coded: "Middle class, well off", while my father's mother's home area was labelled "Lowest class, vicious, semi criminal"...

My Dad who grew up in Peckham/'Erne Hill would later meet Monty a couple of times in Italy and Tunisia, the last time in November 1943 south of the Sangro river and he later recalled:

"The little general at the back responded to our salutes and called us over. It was Monty again and he handed over a large parcel. ‘Share these among the chaps,’ he said. We discovered that the parcel contained 5,000 Gallaher’s Blue Label cigarettes which would give the men in forward positions an extra day’s ration of seven cigarettes. I used to boast: ‘The last time I spoke to Monty, he gave me 5,000 cigarettes.’”

    best wishes

    General Montgomery at the Station
General Montgomery at the Station (in colour on 13th May 1944). His D-Day plans - finalised at Dalwhinnie, were presented to HM King George VIth and General Eisenhower at St Paul's School, Hammersmith, London on the Monday. The special train named "Rapier" was based at "Addison Road Station" not far away. Mary McLagan is just to Monty's right. Mr"Pop" Poe is behind Monty's right shoulder.

One wonders whether any of his fellow officers in that picture made it to high command.

And how many survived the first war.
