I have no idea what's been going on either, although I notice there are a couple of forum members who aren't posting any more.
Really sorry to see you go Kevin.

Possibly something 'hiding in plain view' which is why I'm mystified. Could someone please advise via a 'Conversation'. This Forum is, in my mind, the BEST on the Internet and long may it continue. People come and go so I've a few ideas but, as requested above, could someone please elucidate.

Like most on here I have not a clue what is going on.
Perhaps a reconsider? It would be a shame to pack it in after so many years on the forum.

Unusually for me I think for once I actually have a clue about the situation.

It is sad and it is a loss when those of good and long standing feel they can no longer tolerate an atmosphere, for want of a better word. There's been an ongoing debate on another forum I frequent about the often overwhelming presence of one person, in that instance not because of matters of etiquette but due to their volume of posts. I have seen very knowledgeable folks depart from that forum one after another and it is a poorer place because of it. I haven't tried any of the filters available on WW2talk so don't know if they can effectively 'disappear' a particular poster entirely, certainly the other forum I mention can only do so from the main page and not from sub-forums.

Hopefully a brief hiatus or an Aboriginal style 'walkabout' will suffice, rather than a complete relocation of the bivvy to places new. It is amazing what the hive mind can accomplish on here particular regarding who did what and where and when.

I’m reminded in the days before you could stifle or ignore people on PMT there was a knowledgeable but completely charmless member who would mostly jump on other people’s posts to show how superior he was to them. I found it a lot easier to cope with him once I put it about that his name was an anagram of arse biscuit. It wasn’t of course (not nearly ) but I found it funny. I can feel an anagram competition coming on.

and remember that while opinions are like arseholes (everyone’s got one) fortunately not every opinion’s got an arsehole attached.

    Bloody hell.
I'm not sure why everyone is beating around the bush and leaving other forum members in suspense.
Many members, not surprisingly, have an issue with the style, tone and conduct of Robert-w. I'm not a fan either and after seeing a number of posts, particularly those which I saw as condescending to new members, I decided to simply ignore his posts and later ignored him all together. Done.
I'm very sad to see several stalwart members depart the forum but being the stubborn bastard that I am it will take more than one miscreant to make me abandon what I enjoy.

    Carry on!

I don't say very much, but we should clean house and get rid of whoever is causing the upset. Is that so difficult to achieve? I hate this sort of crap, having had it done to me in the past. The person involved was hit by my own personal steamroller and did not come back for a repeat dose.

I've had my head down giving help by PM and found several names from my Dad's Regiment and had a lot of fun doing it. I had not noticed either. I noticed a couple of the longer serving names had disappeared and PM'd them to see if they had been stricken by Covid19. Thankfully not.

    Hi,

It’s all well and good using the ignore button - I did it myself - but if the conduct isn’t challenged robustly it will just perpetuate ad infinitum and the reputation of the forum will suffer.

The member becomes more emboldened if the perception is that the conduct is tolerated/condoned - either implicitly or tacitly. That is the essence of the appeasement comment I made in my earlier post.

I have no axe to grind against the “powers that be” but this topic has been running for almost 24 hours and we have yet to see any “official” comment......

Thanks to the couple of forum members who have updated me - they know who they are.

As a final comment can I just say that this is a brilliant Forum and long may it continue.

I have only very occasionally had difficulties with other members here. One at least of those is sadly deceased and one is long gone, having screwed the pooch so badly that it bled copiously. Two others remain but have mercifully calmed down; both presumably were "just having a bad day," something I've had myself. I have had no troubles with the named individual. I'm sorry if some have, but though I don't know the specifics I don't see why the problem couldn't be dealt with. From what I can see mods here are generally very responsible and conscientious. (You're welcome, guys.) Much as I respect Otto and much as I like our sister forum, I think the general standard of behavior is higher here. Oh, and whoever is thinking of going please don't.

While I find this behaviour annoying, I also find it very interesting, as I've seen it before on other popular (not WW related) forums.

Some individuals seem to post/reply to posts many times per day, in what appears to be an attempt to clock up a high 'score'.

Generally they appear to have a good knowledge of the subject, although often come across as pedantic or self-opinionated (...put me down for that one!).

They also appear to be rude, sarcastic and generally intolerant of people asking 'stupid' questions. And this is probably due to them spending too much time 'doing what they are doing'. New members always ask 'stupid' questions...because its all new to them. But to certain members, these questions have been asked a thousand times before, "...so why do these fools keep doing it?"

At this point I should like to make it clear that I don't believe there is any such thing as a stupid question. When I tripped over ww2talk a few years ago, the first thing I did was post a stupid question in the wrong forum section (...and I reserve the right to continue posting in the wrong forum sections). Maybe I should have waited a few weeks while I read all the posts and answers, but by definition, noobs know practically nothing about the subject.

Getting back to the subject, the worst crime you can commit on a forum is drive away new members by making them feel stupid. All forums need new members, otherwise they stagnant.

And if you drive away old members, you must question your conduct; either apologise and modify your behaviour (often v.difficult) or simply get out.

    For everyone else, KBO.

You know none of that is ever going to happen though..... as even Canuck’s “name & shame” has had no effect.

Best advice yet. Far better than using the 'Ignore' feature, which I find can make a thread nonsensical.

I know who you mean now. Although I don't post a lot I noticed he keeps jumping in with extra info. As in the last time I posted.
A bit irritating but it goes over my head.

    O tempora, o mores!

Y'know what really drives people away? Bickering. Calling people 'Fuckwit'. Crayoning over good threads with interpersonal dislike. Dragging old beefs from other forums to this one. Passive aggression. Dogpiles. Ultimatums.

We've had control of this place for 13 years now, and for the last 5 or so nobody's even come close to some of the 'problem' members we've had to deal with. Not even in the same league. And yet somehow people handled those really contentious characters in a more measured way. A couple of WW2 veterans even triggered the largest group of departures, but we smiled & nodded & got on with it.

So many have left for so many reasons over the years. Professors, Senior military officers, Veterans, Authors, Specialists, Experts & Entertainers, and yet the place rolls on because the subject will always be bigger than those interested in it.
I get it. People become attached to their cosy online world & wound up when it moves in a way they might not enjoy, but with 28k unique visits last month I can guarantee that nobody speaks for the entire entity.

I've never used the ignore function, because if I don't like somebody, which is almost inevitable in a group (especially if you're me), I roll my eyes a little & just skip the posts. Not difficult & doesn't create distracting 'fuss'.

    The bottom line:
    Want to stay - stay.
    Want to leave - leave.

Not joking when I say 'It's only the internet'.

    ~A
