    Hi,

I am a new member and need help finding out where I can get copies of the appendices to the war diaries of the Lake Sups. I purchased the regimental war diaries through the museum in Thunder Bay but they didn't contain the appendices which have valuable references to the locations and routes of the regiment during the war. My father, A/Sgt Michael Krewiak served in the B Company scout platoon and made it as far as Wouwse Hill where he was wounded on Oct. 26 and taken out of action. I have the regimental book by Stanley and the Can. 4th brigade book but would really like to have the appendices to the diaries.

    Thanks for any help.

    Cheers,
    Michael W. Krewiak

Thanks very much for the help. I don't know where the museum in TB got the diaries when I asked them. Maybe they got them from the LAC and then forwarded them to me. They weren't cheap! But, I got them as a gift for my father so the expense was worth it.

As the first file in that list indicates, LAC is digitized all the WW2 war diaries, although that work has probably been suspended in the current crisis. Unfortunately what's digitized so far seems to start with December.

I don't have the appendices for October, but I have an outline of what they are. DSCF5384.jpg

    Michael,

The museum in Thunder Bay likely holds the Triplicate copies of the WD. You can see from Dryan67's post of an appendices list, most of them were only attached to the Original copy which are held by LAC. That's most likely why you didn't receive them.

A point of clarification for all... LAC isn't digitizing the WDs per se, it's the volunteers of Project 44 that are doing the work with the support of LAC. Once scanned, LAC makes the product available to all via their website. Because of their focus on June 44 to August 44 in NWE initially and now expanding to May 1945 and at some point to Italy, not all the WD will be scanned by them.

    Cheers,

    Joe

Prompted by this thread Good news for Canadian researchers
I posed the question to Project 44. They wouldn't explicitly say, but I think it's their researchers scanning interesting bits, not a systematic effort to scan complete diaries/appendices, etc.

I had assumed that LAC was digitizing them in their entirety. If they are not, that would be... poor.

Fundamentally, if LAC are putting the PDFs on their website but they aren't complete, then they would be a misrepresentation of what is in the file. I honestly find it difficult to believe they would do that.

This is not entirely correct. LAC had microfilmed their collection of microfilm reels in the 1990's and are now online, including all the appendices. The project 44 stuff is new and builds on that. It would be wonderful for all of it to be online...but personally 'Id be happy to see someone do the WD from the Three Rivers Regiment myself).

I just stumbled across this thread, and feel I can shine some important light on the matter (as I am one of the leads at Project '44). For the first part of Project '44, mapping from DDay to 31 August 1944, we used the war diary copies from WLU, and where missing scanned the full war diaries at the LAC digilab, with the help of great volunteers like Joe above.

In fact, we did so much digitzing, the LAC felt it would be worthwhile to digitize the collection to support the second phase of our project: Mapping the North-West Europe campaign from September 1944 to May 1945.

The LAC has been digitizing a massive amount of war diaries since August 2019, and was due to finish in August of 2020. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, digitization has ceased as of mid-March or so. Hopefully will pick up in the late summer or fall.

In regards to what is being digitzed: It is mostly what is in the scope of units that served in the North-West Europe campaign, but plenty of I Canadian Corps war diaries have been digitized from their time in Italy. Its really quite a wide spread of units and dates. We have about 0% of the war diaries we need, but lots of holes we are trying to plug before May. As to the war diaries themselves, it is the entire war diary that is being digitized, which includes all the important annexes, maps, documents, photos etc. Lots of great content. Not everything is online. I suspect plenty more to come over time.

I hope that helps clear up anything in regards to the war diaries. The microfilms were great, but fully digitized war diaries in full colour are far superior. They are exceptional quality, and the preservation team is doing a great job.

I am looking for info on a court marshall that occurred likely between August 1944 and Sept 1945 in the Lake Superior Regiment (motor). would your book contain that info?

    Welcome Jane.

Héritage holds a total of 325 digitised microfilm reels in their ‘Canadian Army Courts Martial documents’ collection. OCR has been used, so it ought to be possible to search for your man.

Search results for "Lake Superior" - Héritage

If you care to share more details it may spark a further potential line of enquiry from someone.

I am a new member coming somewhat belatedly to researching my Father's military career after his death and my own retirement from the Air Force ( don't hold that against me LOL). Some great info here that I am just starting to wade through but I am interested in the Lake Superior Regiment as my father was a member. He joined in Port Arthur in 1940 and came back in 1946 as a Captain. His name was A.G. Ferguson, and I have found a couple of references to him already in the May 1945 War Diary entry. Would love to know if anyone has any photos or info about him ??

Noob here. I am looking for information on the engagement at Zijpe in November 1944. My Dad served with the LSR in Europe. I have his handwritten war journal from August 1944, which is mostly a sentence or two about the daily events around Caen, Ifs, and Falaise. Also, a few pictures, one in Hengelo. Add to that, a Nazi flag which I have identified as a "Wassersportflagge". Are there nominal rolls available to see who was on which Company. There is also a Nazi armband. I'm trying to see if the flag relates to Zijpe.

There is no mention of Zijpe in the November 1944 war diary.
