    Goldstick62.

Are you saying that your grandfather served in 2 N STAFFS? If you are then I have a lot of information on their awful night 7-8 Feb 44 when they were overrun on Buonriposo Ridge.

    Regards

Goldstick, I do hope that you can show your Grandfather's Service Records? I started a thread a while back re the missing war diaries of 2 North Staffs. Cut a long thread short- thanks to forum member Gary Tankard, who found the missing diaries, I now have them for the Anzio Campaign. I'm sure Frank, will send on what he has..;) Whats his name & rank? Owen has kindly saved me from providing the link.

    Regards,
    Stu.

    Goldstick62,

Here's the WD page for 30th May.

From a contemporary map so you can fix the co-ords from the above map references:

    2_North_Staffs_Ardea_May_44.jpg

And a Google map image so you can fix the location now (Ardea in the bottom left corner), marker is approximately Point 61, so the points were between the original old road (as on the map) and the modern dual carriage way..

    Google_Maps_Ardea.jpg

I'm sure you can use Street view but this raod\track runs just to the north of the Points mentioned in the WD.
    The link is Google Maps

Looks has if your Grandfather missed the carnage of 7/8 Feb. 18.02. He joined the 2 North Staffs.

If you would like the diaries, then please start a conversation? I will gladly send them on!

    Regards,
    Stu.

    Martin.

Now that we have seen his Service Record it looks like he was transferred from 2/6 Lancashire Fusiliers to 2 N STAFFS as a battle casualty replacement after the latter’s mauling on the night 7-8 Feb 44.

He was killed in the breakout phase which started on 23 May 44. 1 BR Inf Div and 5 BR Inf Div were tasked with pushing up the coast whilst American Divisions headed for the Velletri Gap and Route 6 to Rome.

I am in Beachhead Cemetery in Apr so I will stop and tip my hat to him. It is good to see from Gary’s photo that his headstone is almost new. The CWGC do a brilliant job in replacing worn ones.

    Regards

    Frank
