Hi Tony That is amazing information thank you for your input! The photograph is very special as my grandfather was a POW with Sgt Rall in Italy and Germany. My grandfather and great uncle were in the 1st SA Police Battalion in the 6th Infantry Brigade. After the war they stayed policemen until 1970. My entire family history is from Natal. (Vryheid, Nqutu, Babanango, Kranskop etc) Grandfather - JJ van Rooyen - 195635 Great Uncle - CJ (Sam) Nel - 195637 Regards JJ
Hi Tony, welcome to the forum. Your photo has clarified a few things regarding the names. From the way the signatures are written I think C A van der Westhuizen is "Olla" and A J Fabricius is "Breakfast" At the bottom of JJ's photo there are some initials which look like LGKL. However I now think they are G K T and stand for G K Timm who was also a POW however I don't have further details. So thanks for posting such interesting information Diane

Hello I have just found this page - we have the photograph hanging on our wall - my father in law was HB Youngleson the signature certainly looks like Youngleer! He is fourth from the right in the back row. Patsy
Hi Patsy, JJ has not been on the forum for just over a year now. Hopefully he will see your post in time.
Hi my grandfather was C.F. Heydenreich. I believe he used to be an interpreter. He played rugby for the eastern province in sa.
Hi I have a book "The Observer Stalag 1VB by David Katzeff. Reproduction of Hand Printed Prisoner of War Wall Newspaper and it's story. which I managed to find on BidorBuy some time ago. C F Heydenreich is mentioned in the international match reports. The print is very small. I will try and scan a few pages and post them later.
Hi, If you look at post #54 in this thread you will see two pages which I downloaded. The book is full of interesting items. If you are anywhere near Cape Town I would be happy to lend you the book. Diane
Hi Dean, here is some more in formation thanks to members Tricky Dicky and Vitellino. From TD "UK, British Prisoners of War, 1939-1945 Name: C F Heydenreich Rank: Sgt. Army Number: 12151 POW Number: 224858 Camp Type: Stalag Camp Number: 4B Camp Location: Muhlberg (Elbe), Germany Section: South African Land Forces : Officers and Other Ranks" From Vittellino "He was also a POW at Campo 85 which was at Tuturano in Puglia. He wouldn't have been there right up to Armistice on 8th Sept 1943 as all southern camps were emptied before Allied landings in Sicily in July 1943." I found this photo of Campo 85 Diane Diane
Hi, I can confirm that Wynand Jacharias (Jurie) Wessels is my grandfather based on his SAP (he remained in the police post WW2) number. How can I get in contact with you to exchange some more info?
Unfortunately it doesn't look like JJ has been on the site since April 2019. It might be worth sending him a Private Message and hopefully he has email alerts set and receives a notification for it.
