I've just seen the terribly sad news that Bob Willis has passed away: Bob Willis: Former England cricket captain dies aged 70
I thought I ought to place this short video up on here. I had almost forgotten that Chris Old got Alan Border out that day.
Watching right to the end, I noticed that Bob was not on the balcony during the man of the match awards?
There is a BBC interview where this is explained. He had to be back with his county side ASAP for the next match and had already left the ground
Well that clears up the mystery. I thought it strange (even for Mr. Willis) having just won the match almost single-handedly, well, with a bit of help from ITB.
In the interview he said that the significance of the victory did not sink in until the car radio was switched on and it was the main headline on the BBC news and not just in the sports report. He was travelling with a fellow team mate and they were somewhat gobsmacked.
I was only of about (edit) nine, going on ten years of age when it was on the BBC. I know i was a spring chicken when it comes to some of the older forum members. I did watch the follow on. I. Botham was 149 not out & G. Dilley made a maiden 50. Some excellent catches was made if you ask me? I do remember watching it with my Old-man. Botham slapped it about a bit. Willis did the rest the day after. What struck me about Willis's run-in was that he seemed to start near on the boundary. He seems to have added Dylan to his name in the past. Bob Dylan that is. Thank-you for showing this. I watched it for quite a while. Regards Stu.
Did i see that old Yorkshire chap called G. Boycott do a stint of about 40. May be my eyes? Going to watch it again. Ace in my eyes.
That made me laugh out loud and recall my own nickname as a very mediocre Sunday second team player batting normally at No. 7: The Seal Clubber.
Yes, I noticed that too and thought it may have been due to the pushy throng of photographers. The crowd probably couldn’t see the team for the w*nkers. Robert cleared-up the MIA mystery. What I noticed watching the clip again is that Bob had the same hair style as me at that time (if style is the right word). Mine was more curly though. Never noticed that before.
It still hurts that my boss would not give me the day off to watch the end of the test. RIP Bob you gaves countless hours of comments and insights after your retirement from the field.
