He died on the Hofuku Maru on the 21st September 1944 when the vessel was sunk following an attack by US carrier borne aircraft( see the thread of that name.) ( My uncle also died.)
He was a jeweller. The Bureau of Record and Enquiry roll states he was sent to Thailand in October 1942, to work on the railway, returning to Singapore in May or June 1944.

    RIP.

..... meanwhile, back to John Joseph Karmy as per initial post....
J J's father, Seraphin, appears to have died in 1955 and Rosa in 1943.
TD may find more, as it is a very unusual surname, and J J is the only Karmy in CWGC records, presumably Rosa died of natural causes, not enemy activity.

CL1, thanks for adding the pictures of the memorials.

Guy, thank you for the list.. Some died due to the dreadful conditions before the sinking and were buried in the waters off Manila, wrapped in a shroud with a lump of bauxite to weight it down. The first name on the list of Pte Leslie Angell is particularly poignant because he survived the sinking but was killed on board a fishing vessel the following day when there was a further attack by US fighters.

I met a survivor in the 1980's, an absolutely charming man, who would do anything he could for anybody else. He worked at a garage serving fuel and would check oil, water, tyres, without any expectation of a tip or asking for one. He served with one of the Cambridgeshire battalions. 2 Cambs suffered the most casualties.

It's hard to explain but they were a different breed. They suffered terribly after the war, mostly in silence, and many died far too early due to the malnutrition they had endured.

My maternal Grandfather would probably have known these men. He was in the 5th Bn but was taken ill prior to embarkation & was discharged soon after.
