Looking for the account of the above for the action Portomaggiore to the Po, northern Italy, during the final phase of Italian campaign. Best Regards James Murrow
James, When I am at my PC, and scanner, I shall make copies of the relevant pages from the Regimental Histories. And provide copies of the War Diary if I have them. (Sorry I can't remember.) Mark
James, If you would like further information, I have the Queen's Regiment History which I can scan, to add their contribution to the action, and details from the Bays. Let me know if you wish the additional information. Mark.
Cheers Mark, I have a copy of the Bays history thanks. Details supplied should do me fine for giving broader picture to the Inniskillings and 38 Brigade at that time. Trust I can come back if required for Queens. Kind regards James
Mark, I am trying to find records of how my uncle met his end, I know he was a trooper in 10th Hussars,(PoW own), and died on 24th Feb 1945, being first burried at Ravenna, then exhumed and re-burried at Argenta. My understanding is that he had both legs blown off and died. Any information or guidance where to search would be helpful. Regards David
David, What was you Uncle’s name? I will look through those sources I have access to. I would suggest getting the War Diaries. Check with Drew5233 or PsyWar.Org to see if they can help. They both conduct a research service at The National Archives, at extremely reasonable rates. Mark
You should also apply for a copy of his records, if you don’t already have them. Information on how to do that is here: Get a copy of military service records. Mark
I have just had a quick look at the Regimental History, p.160: I shall scan the relevant pages (along with anything else I can locate), and post them later today. Mark
If your relative is indeed Ronald Albert Ernest Standen, then he was also injured in 1944, this is the relevant page from the Regimental History: Regarding the 24 February details, I have scanned the pages starting January 1945: Mark
Mark. Yes my uncle was Ronald Standen. Thank you so much. you have found in minutes what I have been looking for, for months, (no years really).
I also copy WD files for a small fee. However, I saw this thread when I was in Kew yesterday so copied these diaries. Here is the WD for April:
Gary, Thank you so much for this. I have never read a war diary before. Quite sobering when you think that these people are up to there necks in mud and bullets but still manage to record these incidents with clarity. I think I now need to trace Rons military course from when he joined up. David
