New BBC WW2 drama, World on Fire

    Bit like Pearl Harbor with added cliches, predictable plots and cringe factors if that's possible.....but you need to watch it just to make sure. :)

    I like World on Fire and I am looking forward to the next episode. It is a drama not a war documentary

    I stuck with it for 4 episodes and endured it for half of the 5th. I don't often make comments on the forum, but I thought it total and utter garbage and waste of a license fee. And my time!!

    My review:

    I don't watch primetime Saturday night television.
    Stuff like this reminds me why.


    Monkfish, but the light drama variant.
    And they need to find a way of changing modern ladies' current eyebrow fashions in period dramas. Maybe that's just me though...

    I've just watched the Dunkirk episode and it really is getting very silly, tediously cliched and ticking ever more PC boxes. The officer hero now befriends a group of colonial French troops, rescues an orphaned refugee girl, takes care of a lorry full of shell-shocked Tommies and notices that sea levels on the evacuation beaches are rising due to global warming (no, I made that one up). As for that bloody cocky, chirpy sailor - fresh from the Battle of the River Plate (he does't half get around) - the Stuka did us all a favour when it machine-gunned him. But is he dead? Don't raise your hopes. Rant over - and I'll still be watching next week.

    I wonder if their viewing figures people know there's a core demographic of those just watching historical dramas to shout 'Pah! a pistol only issued in December 1940, in January!', 'He's holding that rifle like he's in a bloody SWAT team', 'Leather armour in 1640s France!', 'The stupid eyebrows!' etc. etc. etc. in what may or may not be some sort of passive aggressive battle with their other halves...

    I'm guessing they do.
    There may even be an Inserting Inaccuracies & Plot Holes Department, just to keep the numbers up. :unsure:

    Could explain why some better modern dramas like Peaky Blinders are now going for unashamedly modernist touches that actually work as... drama. Their II&PHD fees are substantially reduced.

    Not in the way it is in the bleedin' Musketeers!
    If we're going down the pedantry rabbithole (as we must! It is our destiny!), Leather armour wasn't boiled, despite the cuir bouilli name. If you boil leather you destroy it. It's moulded while sodden and sometimes warmed during the drying process to speed things up.
    And don't get me started on defining a jerkin. I certainly wouldn't want to wear one made of thick or hardened enough leather to qualify as cuir bouilli.

    Genuinely sorry. Triggered.

    That sets me off too. I saw one recently with Brits holding their No.4 Enfields with the inside of the stock on the outside of their forearms like cops do. Looked ridiculous.

    Unfortunately not, not a one.

    Harry’s Polish wife, caught by the Germans in a sting operation, was rescued with amazing ease from the scaffold (those ever lax, incompetent Germans never learn) and whisked to the forest where, surprise upon surprise, she met Harry who had been parachuted into Poland by SOE to bring out some Polish resistance fighters.

    Her male accomplice had been hanged out of hand by the Germans but, James Bond-like, she was given the time and opportunity to escape, although, un-Bond-like, at least the Germans did not explain their entire plot to her prior to somehow allowing her to get away.

    Fortunately, Poland being such a tiny country, their bumping into each other was a formality. They, just the two of them, were last seen about to defeat the Wehrmacht on a hill with a pistol.

    The BBC have warned us that “it will return”. Very MacArthur.

    Sorry, forgot to mention that, apparently, you only needed a pram to be able to access and walk freely around RAF fighter bases. If the Abwehr had only known this they could have won the war in 1940. Fools!
