Our first ever visit to Dover Castle yesterday. The best bit was the "Operation Dynamo" tour of the tunnels, thanks to the multimedia presentations and the commentary from our excellent guide. But also great to see a few guns, look around the castle, and eat lasagna for lunch, although the kitchen looks a bit basic! Highly recommended.
on the way to Dover, coming from London, you might want to stop in Margate and look at an even olde place/room with the walls plastered with mussel shells and similar. Real cosy/ gemuetlich place Stefan. Stefan.
Dover castle is damned fine. Not so many sites with such a wide range of history embedded, from Roman lighthouse to standing on the Keep looking at some Chain Home masts in the distance. I did not laugh at the £19.40 entry price, though. Despite understanding what they did there... Queen Elizabeth's Pocket Pistol a favourite thing from childhood too. Nice that it's now under cover, but very hard to photograph in its new location.
They wanted us to join and showed us the map with English Heritage sites dotted all over southern England. However, a lot of these are either free-of-charge or only cost a few quid...it didn't make economic sense to us. I think we paid £18.80 each... as 2 OAPs.
I know how you feel. I was recently checking the USS New Jersey website. $25 admission and then a la carte from there. $25 for turret tour, $25 for engine room etc,
