Is there an online way to request British WW2 service records similar to the Australian Archives, My Old man and I want to get his dads ww2 records, But i am a little wary of posting a check or money order off, The wait for them is not a big problem, All i really have at the moment is his medals and his service number which is stamped in the side of one of the medals MattF
What is this chek-cue you speak of? (I haven't written one in over a decade). You're correct though. With a named recipient it is a safer method that any online card payment.
Hi Unfortunately they aren't as organised as NAA. You have to fill out the appropriate forms here - Get a copy of military service records and post off with a cheque. regards Robert
WW2 records are only available via the MOD as Robert has linked above, there are web sites that appear to offer this service but in reality its just the name they use and dont provide the service you are after TD
Assume you can send a bankers order or foreign draft issued in Aus, but in sterling & drawn on/through a Uk bank. Last time I used one in Uk If lost in the post/not received they can be stopped & reissued.
From the Gov.uk website: "You can pay by cheque or postal order - or by banker’s draft or international money order if you’re overseas."
I might be a bit late with a reply. I just put 30 pound in with the forms & sent it registered post, I do it for birth Certs to. I am In Australia & I think they understand about getting cheques etc. I always seem to get every thing done Ok..
OK - normally WW2 service medal do not have service numbers stamped on the rim unless the person has done it themselves or had it done. On the other hand all WW1 medals had name, number and reiment stamped on the rim before they were issued to the soldier I am mentioning this also as WW1 sercvice record are available online but WW2 ones are not, so just asking you to double check TD
Hi Richard, Hopefully the OP will clarify the situation re the “inscribed medal” but it could be that it’s a General Service Medal awarded for either pre or post war service in one of the “Policing Actions” such as Palestine. Regards Steve
WW1 service records, if they have survived, and other records are available on two subscription sites: British Army soldiers of the First World War - The National Archives Find My Past World War I – WWI Military Records – Ancestry
Hi James 21 A good place for general information about the British Army in WW1 (no soldiers records there) try: The Long, Long Trail – Researching soldiers of the British Army in the Great War of 1914-1919 or a site similar to this one, but for WW1 is: Great War Forum
