I came across this small box which was given to F/O G.N. Flanders as a token of appreciation for his service. When I opened it also included his Service Medal, 1939-1945 Star Medal and The France and Germany Star. I checked to try to find Mr. Flanders using my reference books and then searching on the site but did not have any success. Many Thanks
A possible George Newton Flanders 1924–1988 BIRTH 18 JUN 1924 • Stamford, Lincolnshire, England DEATH JUN 1988 • Stamford, Huntingdonshire, Northamptonshire, Rutland, England Interestingly in one part it says: Marriage 12/1945 USA This may be why and I am guesing here that you have picked up the box on your side of the pond, maybe you can check out the US marriage side? TD
Checking around again this morning, the only 'fly in the ointment' is that he seems also to have a marriage in the UK at the same time England & Wales, Civil Registration Marriage Index, 1916-2005 Name: George N Flanders Registration Date: Oct 1945 [Nov 1945] [Dec 1945] Registration Quarter: Oct-Nov-Dec Registration district: East Elloe Inferred County: Lincolnshire Spouse: Eunice J Tingle Volume Number: 7a Page Number: 1189 So perhaps the family tree have it wrong, perhaps he married in the UK and then went to the USA during his service with the RAF on an exchange for a period and left the box behind when he/they moved back to UK. I will ask the originator of the tree if they have any more details Is it your intent to try and return these items to the family? TD His son was born in UK in 1948 so I assume he was back there by then England & Wales, Civil Registration Birth Index, 1916-2007 Name: Clive N Flanders Registration Date: Oct 1948 [Nov 1948] [Dec 1948] Registration Quarter: Oct-Nov-Dec Registration district: Stamford Inferred County: Lincolnshire Mother's Maiden Name: Tingle Volume Number: 3b Page Number: 190
Looks like Clive married England & Wales, Civil Registration Marriage Index, 1916-2005 Name: Clive N Flanders Registration Date: Jul 1973 [Aug 1973] [Sep 1973] Registration Quarter: Jul-Aug-Sep Registration district: Peterborough Inferred County: Huntingdonshire Spouse: Jennifer Poole Volume Number: 4b Page Number: 1803 But I cant find any children from that marriage as yet TD
There is a George Newton Flanders commissioned into the RAF recorded in The London Gazette in 1945 Supplement to The London Gazette 5th June 1945 page 2843 Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve General Duties Branch Appointed to Comm as Plt.Offs on prob (emergency) ACM 2CL 1st April 1945 1818312 George Newton Flanders (180532)
His address at death was still in Stamford (28, Scotgate); his date of death was 7th June 1988. (Info from probate, using Find a will | GOV.UK)
I have now spoken - over a hedge (responsibly) - with a neighbour who was at school with the sister. He was known as 'Newton Fanders' and, with his brother, was at Stamford School. The family had a tiny florist's shop on Scotgate, Stamford; next door was the garage of the father of the author Coln Dexter (Morse). Scotgate, until the 1960s, was part of the Great North Road (now A1), the main road from London to Edinburgh.
