Kevin thought it was next to a canal near the cemetery and there is one by the village of Geel Stelen. The woods by Geel are a reasonable distance away.

There are also significant numbers of DLI buried in both cemeteries.

Only have a record of one CMP casualty (not 2) buried in GEEL:

However Monk is buried in Leopoldsburg 18Km distant:

    Notes indicate:

HE WAS BORN IN YORKSHIRE AND RESIDED IN HULL AND FORMERLY SERVED IN THE EAST YORKS REGT. 12/9/44 1 L/CPL INVOLVED IN TA RECEIVED INJURIES HAS DIED. UNIT WAR DIARY WO 171/476. NO INSCRIPTION ON GRAVESTONE.

Record indicates body found at "HETCHEL" looks like misspelling of "HECHTEL" which is further east:

Sorry, but I have to call wishful thinking for the DLI offing 2 x CMP for disturbing their drinks!

it was said that the 2 were young rosy cheeked lads...both men CMP found were in their thirties and one being found on the 12th....maybe nothing happened to the original 2 and the two found in 47/48 were buried elsewhere, even brought back to the UK...nice story tho...im sure shit like it happened now and again....thank CMP

I'm also going to be in the area for the 70th anniversary and have to revisit Geel and Geel (Stelen). Keep me posted about the exact dates and times. It would be nice to see other ceremonies in addition to those I plan to attend.

Will keep you posted. We will be there for 12th Sept and either the day before or day after. We stop at the Vivaldi Hotel at Westerloo and we will be probably 40 to 50 straong but only maybe 4 veterans, if they keep fit & well.

How appropriate. My Dad's Battery arrived in Westerloo on 16 October 1944, just before moving up to the area of Rijkevorsel.

You might be there a week earlier than me possibly. The events I plan to go see take normally place on the third weekend of September.

Please can I use your picture of the gravestone of Trooper. William Reid at Stelen for an article on my website marking the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Geel. Next time I go to Geel I hope my friends in Ten Award will bring me to Stelen. Michael Fisher.
