A member here posted a form for me showing cause of death of a POW ("shot by sentry"). I am researching another POW and wonder where to get that information? Is the IRC the only place? He was a NZ soldier Leslie Spencer Wilson (or possibly middle name Stephen - the NZ graves people have him as Stephen). Died 20/02/44 and is buried at Malbork cemetery. Service No: 10785.
Hi, Is this the topic you refer to? Deaths in XXa and XXb The OP was able to find the required information as the Casualty was serving in RA and they maintained Casualty Cards during WW2. Hopefully a member with knowledge of NZ service file contents may have the answer for you but a good fallback might be an enquiry with ICRC in September and a specific question as to cause of death. It will be noted on their file. Requests for information about people held during Spanish Civil War or the Second World War: Quarterly limit reached Good Luck Steve
Thanks Steve. Yes that was my post. I have the date in my calendar for ICRC in September. Do you know if they allow multiple requests or limited to one per person?

Yes it is, and I am grateful for the info you found for me. I thought I would start a new thread as I would like to know how to research the cause of death (of him and any others sadly killed as POW).
Hi, I don't see a problem re multiple requests although I've never done more than one at a time. One of questions on the online application form is applicants "relationship" to casualty. You'll likely have to tell a white lie as I did when I applied for a couple of my fathers pals Red Cross papers! Steve
Thanks Steve. I do have a genuine relative I will be enquiring about (with same surname so that should help) but am prepared to be economical with the truth about others! Cheers.
Hi, Just looking at official NZ Service Record website - NZDF - Accessing Military Service Records It says that a “first” request for a copy file by an individual is free of charge but if you apply for subsequent files a charge will be made. If you haven’t made a previous application it might be worth applying for his service file as it will cost you nothing. Steve

I have checked for the name in Kew series WO311, WO309 without a result, but file titles can just refer to the death, shooting, killing, murder, etc. of an allied prisoner of war. For records at the US Archives see: https://www.archives.gov/files/research/captured-german-records/microfilm/t1021.pdf For records in Poland see : https://jri-poland.org/help/Sources-on-the-Holocaust-in-Occupied-Poland.pdf
