Two locations on the route of 8th Rifle Brigade, possibly/probably Germany. Does anyone recognize them?

In the second photo, the building(s) on the horizon look very much like the barracks at Husum, Schleswig-Holstein, where 23H were stationed from May 45 onwards.

The second photo is from the outbuilding next to the Schloss Gottorf in Schleswig-Holsteinische. Google Earth 'Schloss Gottorf' and the building is at 7 o'clock of the schloss just below the car park. You can street view it too!

Thanks Bruneval! That makes sense. As I suppose you will know, right after the war 8RB was based at Schloss Gottorf...

The picture I am posting of 'Gut Wining', Schaalby, is where the tanks were located just outside of Schleswig. It is so similar to the earlier Photo submitted by 8 RB. I will have to research further!

The dark Google map below shows the Gut Winning.

Much of the Armour was also in the village of Moldenit which is to the north, but not far away.
I wonder if the Gut Wiining was a HQ? Ideal locationn it's slendor! Easy to defend due to the Schlei and the tree lined road led to Modenit in 1945. Moldenit has since been bypassed.

I have this listed as Gut Winning as well. Was it in the Gut Winning? The windows layout are very similatr to the black white photo.

This must be the reverse side

I have a Google of the location. The Gut Winning is circled. The red dot (top left) is the location is the location of further photos which I have, I found them here on WW2talk or on the net some where..

Hi Alan8376, Thanks for your help but I am afraid this is not the same building*. Apart from the details and the missing dormer windows, also the width of the building and the number floors do not match. If you have a different view or meant something different, I hope you will let me know. The same goes if anyone has other ideas about this building's location!

    Kind regards, Ronald.

*): Edited later: re-reading your post, I think that is also not what you mean to say, just that there is a similarity. I hope you are right and that you can find the spot. On the other hand I am also hoping and thinking it might be "pre-VE-Day" picture.

    8RB,
Yes, you are correct in saying I thought they are might have been the same. I came to the thought that one side could have been built different! I binned that and added general some Tankie info for interest from Schleswig. Of course Schloss Gottorf I know very well and Schleswig Stadt quite well.

I've got my Bongo Drums out for you. My scouts will discuss possibilities over Bier and Bratwurst over night. That is if it is in the general area of Schleswig -Eckernfoerde - Kiel- Flensburg. Of course the Gut may be long gone now? Possibly spruced up!

Thanks Allen. Since I suppose you might be interested, I have attached two more (post-war) photos taken around Schleswig, one from the lake, the other showing non-fraternization in practice...

Thanks for the photos. (Nice clear quality). I'll put them in my Schleswig file.

Can I have your permission to submit the photo to be included in the :
    Facebook site
'Alte Schleihalle' photo section. Of course without the title you use!. I wonder if the young girl still lives in Schleswig?

I stayed for almost a week at Schleswig just behind Schloss Gottdorf ... if I had known earlier I could have provided you with some 'now' pictures .... unfortunately I'm in Sweden right now ... the missus got tired of WW2.

We now frequent Viking sites :pipe:

Stolpi, don't tell me you didn't visit the Viking settlement discovered in recent years in Schleswig. It is 5 mins drive from Schloss Gottorf.

Alan - you mean Hedeby (pronounced as Heejeebuu by the Danish) and the nearby Danevirke ... yes ... but that is for a different forum.

BTW I live close by the old Dorestad, another early medieval international trading place, which was so intensively frequented by these Nordish tradesmen during the 9th Century that it no longer exists.

Let's not get distracted by SS, Vikings or even 29th Armoured Brigade's HQ, however interesting they all may be, and get back to the original question: do you recognize (the location of) this building?! :D
