I think the Japanese Kaga class ship mentioned being torpedoed was probably the Soryu, but it was not hit by Ens G.H. Gay. Ens Gay is well known for being the only surviving air crew member of Torpedo Squadron 8, flying Devastators, at Midway. Gay was one only 4 aircraft to get close enough to the carrier to launch his torpedo but he missed widely and was shot down in doing so. Ens Gay floated under a seat cushion and watched VB-3, VS-6, and VB-3 land bombs on carriers Kaga, Akagi, and Soryu, resulting in their loss.
6/21/42 & 6/22/42 An interesting snippet of a shelling North of Oregon in a sparsely populated area of Vancouver
Heading out of town for a couple days so some extra news hitting the stand! As always in my opinion some great maps and a snipit regarding spies landing in Long Island USA 6/24/42,6/25/42,6/26/42,6/27/42,6,28/42 & 6/29/42
Perilous times for Allies depicted in most of later clippings. The Battle of Midway did not seem to make as great of impression as it since has. I did not realize how much sugar went into making explosives. Significant.
Back from a short time away. News from the Aleutians to the Suez Canal 6/30/42, 7/1/42, 7/2/42,7/3/42,7/5/42,7/6/42 & 7/8/42
7/9/42/7/11/52 & 7/12/42 Interesting report on the bombing of Cologne and also the BBC waring to the French people to evacuate a large area along the coast. Ensign Gay is also mentioned again By Admiral Nimitz as the pilot who was responsible for sinking of a Japanese carrier.
For those who have been following the newspaper post I apologize for the lack of information lately. Unfortunately I had some needed surgery and hopefully I will return to posting in a few days
7/19/42, 7/20/42,7/21/42 & 7/30/42 Interesting map showing protected flying space along the US East Coast.
