I am new to the forum. Your point only goes to reinforce the aim of the thread that there is a need to clearly mark different sections. D-Day 1944 would be an effective reference point on the forum.

Change is sometimes difficult to accept. I feel I have made a valid point which I hope administrators will take on board. Unfortunately I feel a couple of the comments are unwarranted or inappropriate and therefore I have reported them to the administrators.

My $0.02 Canadian: if you want to see discussion on D-Day then start discussion about it. It doesn't necessarily need a section and it crops up all the time on the forum. Instead of looking at sections why not look at past discussions?

    Hi,

We've acknowledged each anniversary of the Normandy landings since this forum started. A sub-section for one day is unnecessary since much of the discussion flows into the Normandy campaign itself ie the very purpose of the landings.
NW Europe and other sections like Trux 21st Army Group | WW2Talk are sufficient for 06/06/1944

As one of our sadly missed forum members - a WW2 veteran - was fond of reminding us : there were many D-Days. ;)

Having said that - 'a few' related threads which were tagged as d-day are now tagged
    d-day (normandy) | WW2Talk

For the majority here there is no tendency to focus on 1940. People post about whatever interests them or catches their eye. Many of us are more interested in units/vehicles/war establishments/orbats/campaigns/commemoration of the Fallen, not dates/years. We simply happen to have quite a few members willing to share lots of information/knowledge that's related to the 1940 period.

More to the point: an Admin decision was made years ago to create a new section for 1940 because, in many regards, it was deemed to be separate from the rest of the war.
    1940
"The Campaign in Belgium, France and Holland' - 1940 and all that - Same war, but almost a different era."

With that in mind, I don't think there's any pressing need to rip 1945 away from 1944. Aside from anything else, it'd be a moderating nightmare under NWE alone. I'd not be willing to move threads, separate posts, disrupt flow of extant threads.

Besides, as one of our Veteran members at least would probably point out, in "1944" the war was continuing apace in other parts of the world as well.

Very patronising first line above and your first post stating a point with no substance or making suggestions.
We have many experts on the forum who have added and continue to add specific content WW2 related
Try using the search function you will notice there is an eclectic mix of information right through WW2,before and after.

Why didn't you just start a thread suggesting a section instead of all this piffle.
Perhaps you have never worked in a collective environment where you state you thoughts/ideas/plans and then implement.
When you teach you should also listen and be open to different opinions running alongside your own mantra.
    Quite simple really.
So don't try to be smart it is very gimpy.

Welcome to the forum and please add your posts on D-Day or whatever you wish.

    regards
    Clive

I've never thought about it as the place was always awash with Normandy stuff.

Still is... but... unlike many WW2 sites I always rather liked that, for instance, Italy was so well-represented here, with Ron, Tom, & Gerry's veteran presence perhaps leading that charge.

There's no forum 'campaign' list really. It's divided into theatres for quite logical reasons, and the 1940 area is indeed because a coterie of dangerously obsessive loons serious types pumped out so much interesting & archivally sourced stuff on a pretty web-neglected area.
They earnt it. (And I even think it might have had a genuine positive effect on the wider 'web historiography' of WW2, but don't tell the aforementioned dangerously obsessive loons serious types that. )

Fascinated as to where 'a focus on the blitz & 1940' has become a pattern, as I'd say Normandy gets more than a majority of coverage on websites, newspapers, books, computer games, soshul meeja, etc. etc. already.

We have North-West Europe, Trux, and assorted other headings that tons of Normandy stuff lives under.
The search engine is rather good.
(And tags are worth following if an interest is specific.)
I quite like not having a specific area for the Landings, partly because I'm a contrarian, but mostly because it isn't really needed.

Why not try settling in, learning the culture of the place, working out where it's odd or weak & where it's not.
Forum headings aren't the best way to browse this vast, strange, 15 year, heap of WW2 'stuff'.

    Big old war.

I must admit I often don't know where to put a new post, so usually opt for "general".

Quite often, during the middle of the night, some kind fairy appears and silently moves my wayward posts from "general" to wherever they belong. Brilliant! I love this forum.

1940 Envy. Who'd have thought it ? OK, I understand that the BEF had the best-looking kit, vehicles and uniforms, but even so....My recollection is that it was hived off as threads became lost amongst all the later stuff. I don't really know if it needed a separate forum, or whether a sub-forum would have done, but that would spoil the sense of good order of the 'Theatres of War' section which is neatly divided geographically. We've been through several changes of format since that time and there are inevitably anomalies. 'N.W. Europe' of course is a little different as a substantial area of the same patch of ground, The 'Fatal Avenue' was fought over twice in two completely different campaigns. Whatever, I can't see that Overlord and it's preparations fall outside of the N.W. Europe sub-forum.

If D-Day gets its own, I want separate forums for Fall Gelb and Fall Rot, and for 'Dynamo', 'Cycle' and 'Aerial' :)

I agree [with Kip] …. and we also need an Op Veritable or Rhineland (Feb/March 1945) section soon :D.

    Wie, bitte?

It's hardly secret that I'd really like just two forum headings. (The arrangement of forums for legacy & organisational reasons still causing me some pain):
    • WW2 Stuff.
    • Other Stuff.
Be careful what you wish for...

And if the staff aren't too busy, could they start dividing all the various Cassino threads into four separate categories, one for each of the battles?

Similarly, we need to establish and maintain a clear divide between First and Second Alamein.

    It won't take long...
