Good evening I've been asked to re-post my original enquiry since I now understand I should not have started my title with 'ID' due to the error messages that result - my apologies for this. The previous answers have been noted with thanks. I wonder if anyone can help with the ID of this man's uniform insignia ie the 'Anchor' on his left shoulder? My son-in-law thinks he may be a member of the Royal Navy who's done the Commando Course but is not sure. Any help with the medal ribbon ID would also be appreciated. Thank you in anticipation. Kind Regards David
Africa Star medal ribbon. Looks like a brass 1 to denote he was in First Army. I stick to my Beach Group answer for anchor. I think it's been coloured in incorrectly.
Apply for his service records that will answer your questions - Request records of deceased service personnel My guesses in response are on the old thread - ID of Uniform Badge and Medal Ribbon TD
Thanks everyone for your input... very much appreciated. From the responses, I think I am safe to assume my man was *A corporal in the First Army *In a Beach Group (the anchor should be red but has been incorrectly coloured) *Awarded the Africa Star Medal (First Army clasp) I am enquiring on behalf of my cousin, the man is a relative of hers but I shall encourage her to send off for his full service record. Thanks again gents. David
Do you know his service number, that would enable you to identify the Regiment and which Beach Group he was attached to?
I'm afraid we don't know his service number Guy, so for now, I think that's as far as we go. I was enquiring on behalf of my cousin, she's going to see if she can find anything else out and take it from there. Thanks again to everyone for their help. David
See post 3 - apply for his service records - you dont need a service number but you will need a death certificate - the records will answer all [at least most] of her questions TD
It’s either a ‘1’ for the 1st Army or an ‘8’ for the 8th Army on the ribbon. I think, I can just partially see what appears to be an ‘8.’ Not too sure, 50/50 on that one ;-) Marcus
Hello David, This link may assist: Photo 89 or 90 RE July 1945 Germany Is the photograph an original colour photograph or has it been colourised? The reason I ask is that the Beach Group anchor is not blue, but it is in the photograph! Best, Steve.
Thanks Marcus... I've tried zooming in and it's really difficult to tell whether it's a 1 or an 8 but like you, I'm beginning to think it's an 8. Thanks Steve... I've read the thread with interest. I'm pretty sure the photo has been colourised later and I think incorrectly since as you say, the Beach Group anchor should be red, not blue. I've tried to encourage my cousin to apply for his service record to find out more about this man. Thanks again and kind regards David
