Has anyone picked up a copy of the new book about 231 Infantry Brigade on D-Day? I think it’s called “Spearhead Brigade”. I saw it being waved about on one of the D-day programmes but I can’t see it on sale anywhere. Regards Tom
Hi Tom, It looks like it might be this one? D-Day Spearhead Brigade – Christopher Jary ISBN13 9780992903374
Hiatus broken. Whether I need medieval Osprey books is one thing; whether any among us can resist them for a couple of quid is quite another. And Pavia fascinates me, so there's that.
Curious little Profile publication I'd not seen before. Surprisingly good on early US armour & later developmental mucking about. The Works had a few of the Haynes books for £4. Dunno if it's nationwide, but the Challenger 2 one by Dick Taylor was included - it's rather good. Was a bargain at £7, a steal at four. (Oddly fascinated by the Spirit of St. Louis since finding it had no windscreen...)
I do like them. Mum, any chance you can buy me these for Christmas? (On your bike Stuart!) I do hope you do not intend to move back to the UK in the near future. Seriously though you have given me a good idea. Its better than a load of shelves. Stu.
You purchased this item on 27 Dec 2010 United States Armour-Cavalry: A Short History, 1917-67 (AFV/Weapons Series) no idea where it is in a pile somewhere
Move back to the UK? I've already looked into how much it costs for a shipping container to move furniture and possessions and it ain't pretty! One day, but not yet. Still squirreling away acorns.
Came across a copy of this book when searching for something else and snapped it up. It's by the World Ship Society who do good work and published in 2012 so has a wider access to Soviet/Russian sources than other studies touching on the subject.. It looks at the Soviet Merchant fleet from pre revolution days up to the immediate post war. Lots of pictures and data. Book looks at actions in specific areas (Arctic Convoys, Odessa, Aid to the republicans, Far East actions) as well as detailing organization, lend lease, ship building etc. All in all a worthwhile buy for the light it sheds on another overlooked (in English) area of WW2 history.
I'm on a little vacation next week to Winnipeg and Victoria (both in Canada, that is) and I am looking forward to investigating their used book stores
10/10 from the pleasing obscurity judges. I would buy that like a shot, if only for the pure look of disappointed amusement on the Fishwife's face, but it'd have to turn up naturally in a shop.
Having some good progress through Victoria bookstores. I wasn't aware of the liberation of the Netherlands book and am interested to read it as it has both soldier and civilian accounts. The odd little blue book is a present for my father. Published 1897 by T Nelson and Sons, about the voyages of the Hansa and Germania, Tegethoth, and Fram. He is very interested in the Arctic and I hope he gets a chuckle out of the period account.
Two new packages arrived for me: Found a cheap copy after waiting for a couple of years. and thanks to Chris C on this forum I found out about this book and was able to track down a copy: For those looking for hard to find books, I'd recommend trying the 'Create a Want" system on Abebooks. It's found more than one hard to locate title for me (most recently the Arthur title posted above). Thanks Chris for putting the book on my radar!
Ugh, two pages just came out of the Liberation of the Netherlands book. I think I'll try to get a refund.
Chris - there is another - much better - title on the Canadians in Holland, unfortunately for you it's only available in Dutch.
Thanks Stolpi, though... I don't read Dutch so could someone get on with translating it? Here is the second and final round.
After first look both Kotelnikov's and Toeppel's books looked very promising. The book on Murray was disappointing to me because I hopped some info on the actions of 153rd Brigade of 51st (Highland) Division during the Oper. Totalize but at least it was very cheap.
Received a TurnerDonovan catalogue while at work today. Tried to order The Black Cat Division (the short Indian history) eleven minutes later only to get a 'Sold' message. I've now been outbid once on eBay and have ordered minutes too late twice on this book. Feeling cursed! This is my current book-buying problem.
