I see what you mean regarding the letter "E"

TD would the "C" company mean he was with the "C" company in NW Europe as I have the war diaries for his period in NW Europe but there's a "A" to "E" company's out there and I haven't a clue what company he was with !

The document just shows that the ration was issued from C Company, as far as I can see he could have been in any company - just that C Company had some rations to issue at that time

Ok thanks , is there any possible way of finding out what company he was with out there ? Or is that near impossible ?

If they where put into say "A" company could they be changed into say "E" company while out there or would they stay with the company they where put in from the word go ?

OK - so if A coy was obliterated, they would probably syhpon off men from the other companies to ensure they had the right number of companies for the operations they needed to do even if they were a little short in quantity. Following any action and being moved back from the frontline they would then replenish the Coys with replacements and probably mix them up again so that you would have a melange of experienced and new together. It would not be a good idea to have a full E Coy in reserve if there was only 3 men on the frontline in A Coy

If you read any regimental histories, memoires or war diaires of those units that were in frontline action then your questions would be answered. Men were moved to wherever they were needed

Lets wait and see what his records say - I am also confusing myself as looking back he was in the RA and as such that does not use the term Company, and so I am also unsure where & why you have used it. As he, I believe was RA then he would be in troop - so you need to concentrate on that area BUT await his records - all this could be irrelevant

I've got the service records, he trained with 216 searchlight up till July 1940 then was transferred to 67th searchlight regiment , then 67th garrison regiment before embarkation in December 1944 , then redisignated to 608 regiment in Feb 1945 , then I think 21st army group in may 1945 but I stand corrected

OK - thats a part of his service record, and its the first notification that you have them - why not post them. The other thing you need to do is start looking at the war diaries for the units he was in at the times he was in them. None of them [I doubt] will mention him by name, but will know where he was and what he was doing approximately when - time for you to satrt researching

Looking through this whole thread there are 1 or 2 copies of a document that are from his Paybook, I cannot find a copy of his full service record as would be provided by the MOD

Maybe I am missing something - like a rendezvous with an opthalmist ?
