As suggested by Roy apply for his service records. The link below is the only place you will find his records. You will not find them on the internet so dont be fooled in handing over any money.

Cost you £30 via the official government route
Get a copy of military service records

    regards

If by Certificate of Service you mean Form S549 you are indeed lucky. This Form was handed out on discharge and no duplicate was kept. So many have lost their's over the years. Post a copy here as Roy suggests and members will be able to help deciphering it and show you where he was serving.

Form S549 is the most useful and will have most of the information you probably want ie: Rating and ships he served on together with the dates. From these it will be possible, hopefully, to establish where the ship was when he was onboard. Problems occur if he served on small ships as then sometimes only the Accounting Base is shown rather than the actual ship. Post a copy on this Forum and we will see how far we can get. As you have the S549 I wouldn't bother with the Service Record from the MoD just yet - they may not add anything.

The experts will tell you, but they all look like shore bases to me.

HMS Defiance and Drake are UK shore establishments. HMS Ferret was a shore establishment in Northern Ireland. HMS Golden Hind was a shore establishment in New South Wales, Australia - being built up to supply manpower for the expected increase in the war against Japan. HMS Woolloomooloo (what a fantastic name!) was an RN Repair Yard in Sydney, Australia. HMS Pursuivant is giving me some trouble, it was the Base Accounts and Accommodation Ship at Port Stanley, Falklands Islands, but what type of ship it was escapes me. There is one ship I can't read as the initial letters have been cut off in the copy (Sep-Nov 45).

It would appear to be 'Golden Hind'

No. The entry between the two for Golden Hind. It could be HMS Striker, an escort carrier undergoing repairs in Sydney at the time.

Thanks TD. Already seen that but still stuck on what type of ship Pursuivant was. I have found a WW1 reference that it was a shore establishment but suspect it's accuracy as it doesn't tie in with info at #16.

Cdr R.B. Martin (Rtd) was in charge of HMS PURSUIVANT, the Royal Navy communications establishment at Port Stanley. HMS PURSUIVANT was the name given to the base.

Write to the MoD medal office, it’s a free service they will confirm what medals he was entitled to, when they were issued, if they weren’t then the nok can claim them

    Google claiming ww2 medals

    Regards

Thank you so much for all your help. Sorry to sound silly but what does Shore Establishment mean?
