    Hi Nigel,

Scott was a very popular commander in both years. He was also nicknamed 'Jammy' by some of his men, due to the fact he always seemed to choose the right path to take whenever maps and compasses became useless items. A very good addition to a commanders armoury, luck!!:)

Attached are two photos of Walter Scott, one from 1942 the other you may recognise from 1944.

Also attached is an image of a painting of the King's landing at Broadway, depicting Scott.

Many thanks Steve, and completely agree, t'is better to be lucky than many other things!

The painting image you attached has had me searching, and i found the artist's website here - David Rowlands Military Artist Looks like he does a print which would make a fine addition to my grandad's wall come Christmas, so thanks for that

One other thing i forgot to mention, he confirmed he was at White City, Aberdeen, and Broadway...i'll work on the extra details next time we catch up

    Cheers

    Nigel

Glad to be of assistance with the Xmas shopping Nigel!!:D
I have some recent photos of White City and Blackpool, which were taken in 2008 when I visited Burma. They are posted on the forum somewhere, if I can't find the thread I'll re-post them on this one.

    Hi all,

Sounds like a fantastic series! Especially the one on the Chindits. I hope it makes it to the US eventually. I'd be interested in hearing about everyone's thoughts on each episode, so please keep posting your reviews. Is anybody recording the series?

    Hi Kopite,

Not recording the series (as the research would really go off on a tangent then!) but have recorded this Chindits one to DVD. I also have a copy of the 'Gladiators of WW2' episode regarding the Chindits which seems to be quite highly regarded - you can still get a copy from Amazon if you are lucky

    Best regards

    Nigel

    Kopite,

That's a good shout from Nigel about Gladiators of WW2. Also, sometimes on Ebay people sell the single disc about Burma from the World at War series from back in the 1970's.

This is back on UK digital tv at the moment, but I am guessing you are struggling with this, being in California! (Not that I'm jealous or anything like that you understand!!:))

Attached is an image of the disc, and again its probably Region 2 format.

    Thanks for the info Nigel,

I just checked on Amazon US for the 'Gladiators of WW2' series and it is still available, so I'm thinking about adding it to my collection.

I believe I've seen this episode as the series is still played regulary on the History Channel over here. Does it include the footage about Merrill's Marauders also?

    Hi Steve,

    Yes, I think it does.

There are three episodes in the series that have relevance to the Burma theatre. The other two cover Pearl Harbour and battles involving Japan and the US and the most interesting one to me, Japan's build up to war and the explanation of their national pysche.

    Wonderful programs all.

Currently the dulcet tones of Sir Laurence Olivier are yet again gracing the Yesterday channel as the World at War series is repeated...haven't seen the Burma episode come up just yet though..

The Chindits is i believe episode 12 out of the 13 in the Gladiators of WW2 series

    All the best

What a coincidence! I'm watching the Military Channel right now and on comes the World at War episode of the Burma campaign "It's a Lovely Day Tomorrow". I haven't seen this episode before.

    Fantastic! Made my day! :D

Hi Ken. Maybe you know, but there is BBC documentary "Horror in the East: Burma - the Forgotten War". Three veterans returned in Burma, Bruce Kinloch, Richard Rhodes James and John Hill, and Richard Rhodes James was interviewed at site of the Blackpool. Not much but it could be interesting for you. BTW, great documentary to watch, one of the best about Burma campaign (at least for me). Cheers

Indebted yet again, Enes, not one I was aware of but certainly am now... I'll start hunting... ;)
As I was briefly discussing with Foggy elsewhere I've been seriously derailed... still trying to get back on course... (and that he's got his site up and running... B)
Nice to see you're progressing, Nigel... interesting article too...

I've caught up with the Narrow Escapes now and have been enjoying the series greatly...

I've just ordered the "Horror in the East" DVD myself and should receive it in a few days. It's actually three documentaries in one package. The first is 98 mins in length and examines the Japanese Army from WW1 through WW2. The other two are 1 hr. in length, and are called "Forgotten Volunteers: The Indian Army" and "Burma-The Forgotten War"

Found that one but so far only traced R1 copies, excluding a box-set... now saved as a search...

I watched this programme the other day. Very good effort. Also some footage have never seen before with a great clip of Calvert and that boxer's jaw. Hard as nails. 14 mins in.
