William Edgar Stedman (please help for daughter to research dad) ww2 Burma ? Sussex ?

im trying to trace the above chap for his daughter he was born 28th Aprill 1916 in Brixton and they lived in Eastbourne..she tells me she thinks he was at the TA barracks and went to Burma..the TA barracks is Sussex and Royal engineers his father was William stevens Stedman
Any help would be great

Hi,

There is no shortcut to getting a man’s WW2 service record from the internet via Ancestry/FMP as they are still held by MOD.

As you have the death certificate you just need to follow Clive’s above advice and submit an application to MOD.

Hi,

His unit could have been 208th Field Company Royal Engineers, which seemed to be Eastbourne based.

A book was written in 1972 (digitised 2006) by the committee of 208th Field Coy. R.E called:

Sussex sappers: a history of the Sussex Volunteer and Territorial Army Royal Engineer units from 1890 to 1967

The 208th were in the order of battle for the British Army in France on 10th May 1940, so William Stedman may have been a pre-war TA soldier, who was mobilised in September 1939.

The unit have a war memorial at All Souls Church, Susans Road, Eastbourne, which shows they were part of 2nd British Division, fought in Flanders 1939-40, Kohima 1944 & Burma 1944.

208 Field Company Royal Engineers 2nd British Division WW2

Seems also there was in 2008 an Eastbourne branch of the Royal Engineers Association.
