Admirable. And liking the self-awareness. Some of my favourite books are easily described as a bit weird...
This is very bad timing. You'd think Gun Jesus would realise I'm currently spending a fair chunk on building a new pooter & had decided to dampen down on books for a while... Chassepot to FAMAS: French Military Rifles, 1866 – 2016 Remarkable response to the kickstarter. Oh dear. Hmmm. Etc.
Hehe. I am definitely pausing on buying new books after the deal I thought I had found turned out to be Hodges' original little book on British tank markings without Taylor, which I understand has errors in it. Plus, I am not sure what material is in it that I don't already have. So that was a bit of a waste of money. But I do have a copy of the book on Gloster Gladiators coming which the author mentioned here.
Wiil i read it or pile it On its way My Part of the Sky Roland Beaumont Was a few quid now showing at much higher price
Osprey titles are very variable in quality but the good ones are very good at providing short readable history. Given the number of titles the company produces, they also explore areas that other publishers don't touch. Both these titles fall into that category. Nicholas Milliman is a noted expert on Japanese aircraft and has written a number of other Osprey titles on the subject. He uses Japanese sources thus producing a balanced look at early Zero aces. The book on the Baltic Independence Wars is written by an Estonian who has access to many sources not readily accessible to English speaking authors. In addition aside from scholarly presses, the chances of finding a book on this topic in English are slim. Great selection of images and a good look at the German Freikorps active in the area. So for the price, both worthwhile buys
So this doorstopper just arrived. Guess I've got the Australian Army in WW2 covered now From publisher's description The Unit Guide - Big Sky Publishing
That's impressive. I'd be intererested to see some page samples (and I'd imagine I'm not alone). I keep on meaning to buy Kempton's Loyalty & Honour set for the Indian Army, but it's a lot of money--especially with postage--and if you're going to splash out it would have to be the hardback versions...
As requested some page samples. I've included some examples of unit profiles and OOBs as presented in the guides. Apologies for my photography. It was early in the morning.
I note with delight and dread that a town in BC near Victoria International Airport (Sidney, BC) has six used bookstores together including "The Military and History Bookshop" I hope to go there in early July...
......and I'm going to the Tilly sur Seulles bookfair on 9th June. All is lost.....or not as the case may be......
I went to a village bookshop in Northants and came out with four Indian Army-related titles, a Malayan campaign and a 1940 one. Hate to think what would happen at a specialist venue...
Aaarrrrgggghhhhhhhhh! I've just checked the publishers and authors who are scheduled to be there.........new Bank Account needed..........
Will be leaving on the 8th. Very sad to miss this great bookfair. Would have preferred to have needed a new band account...
In a moment of weakness I finally ordered these three titles on the US Army in Normandy: Now I will have to visit the area as well …
I know that we don't 'do' politics here, but this made me sit up an take notice...The 'Greens' in Belgium have apparently commissioned a feasibility study into a 'vermogensbelasting' - a 'Property' or 'wealth' tax...and their eyes have fallen upon wine or book collections :-( "How far will 'Green' go to introduce a property registry? An explanation to the Council of State shows that the party is also looking at wine cellars and book collections of more than 5,000 euros. But in the meantime, they have changed their tune. "We only look at insured collections." A book tax. What sort of politician could even think about a tax on books ? Back to the middle ages ! O.K. Most of my books are worthless the moment that Amazon delivers them...but imagine filling in a tax return that asks how much you've spent on books...This would not be good for marital harmony.
