Good stuff. The cylinders in the picture confused me and made me think it was something other than a coal gas generator. Reading about Fahrschulepanzerwagens described how the gas generated could be stored in the cylinders and used later

That building appears to be the background of another "what is it"posted on the forum...could be wrong of course.

Wood generated gas fuelled transports featured a great deal in France during the war.. such devices were common on the streets of Paris. The French transports stored their gas in gas bags at the top of the vehicle.

Seen accounts where the Maquis were involved and an operation had to await enough gas being generated to move off.

Found this in The Fighting Brigadier ,by Harclerode.
1st Bn Para Regt. North Africa
……..we rolled up and concealed our parachutes ,the better because German Recon .aircraft were active in area, he also informed us he thought we should move on to Beja without delay, and that were some local buses
powered by charcoal nearby that could be commanded, we found these and at 1800 we set of eastwards in to the mountains.....

So the first Battalion drop by British Forces was followed up by an advance to contact in charcoal powered buses.
