I consciously bought a copy of the Northamptonshire Home Guard's history despite the red biro willy that decorated one of the pages. For a tenner, I didn't want to let go of it.
I've a brother who might have paid more. A long-term devotee of phallic graffiti in all its diverse & historical forms... Whole morning in town without a single book purchase. Not even a 1944 ROC recognition manual that tempted for a while. Is there some sort of 24hrs clean chip I can apply for, or does that take a little longer? (And, errr, a cookbook that just this second turned up doesn't count, right. Cookbooks aren't an addiction... probably.)
My young daughter swallowed a handful of Scrabble tiles earlier today. The next trip to the lavatory could spell disaster.
This willy stroke (bell end) has decorated near on (100 pages!) This is rather a detailed book of about 430 pages. In my eyes , he may be questioning the author which is Lt- Col O.G.W. White, D.S.O. It also has a forward by General Sir Montagu Stopford. G.C.B., K.B.E., D.S.O., M.C.,. The General has another gong that i have not seen before. The last time i had ding dong with this book seller, i ended up getting a original copy of another rare book at a decent price.
First online book order ever lost in the post. Thankfully ordered via Abe, who I see have an auto refund policy 8 days after reporting. Irritating & I'd rather have the book (which I actually asked the author about content) than a refund, especially as it was a good price, but nice to know. Faith not lost in World of Books, though. They've been good to me many times in the past, and shit happens. Have also learnt that if something's a bit pricey, I might pay a quid or two more for that Abe guarantee in future. (Same copy was on their ebay, but not their main site. Slightly different prices...)
I was meaning to ask you a question: I've ordered from a lot of second-hand military booksellers, British and overseas, and I've thought about starting a thread to list/review the best and the worst of them. There are a couple, naming no names yet, who are dishonest, a few who are useless at their chosen jobs and a large number who are excellent. Is this likely to put the cat among the pigeons?
Now that is a book buying problem! Thankfully it's rare. My worst one was the arrival of a card-backed envelope which I eagerly opened to find nothing inside. Closer inspection showed the envelope had been slit at the other end; nice of them to send the envelope on its way...
Well, so long as we all agree to try to be amicable? I can't imagine the book-buying power of this forum is SO great as to affect any store's bottom line...
Might be fodder for the bookshops thread, though that's specifically on 'good' shops. As long as it stays the right side of libellous... This is maybe the current thread for book nerds to discuss such issues? Mildly cautious as I've seen similar threads elsewhere on militaria dealers turn really nasty based on one motivated disgruntled customer.
I don't know how you lot can talk about a 'book-buying problem'. At least you're buying books with something in 'em ! I just got carried away on eBay, put a silly max bid on and ended up paying over £70 for a book with blank pages. It is however an unissued BEF period AB 412 It came from Northern France too. The only question is, do I get a fountain pen of diluted ink out and fake the details, building up a provenance for my Norton ?
I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins, because of Thy just punishments, but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, who art all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace to sin no more and to avoid the near occasion of sin.
Neither am I. Had a copy for years...and Taurus Pursuant (two copies because one had a better dust jacket.......) and quite a few more relating directly or indirectly to 11th Armoured Division and 3RTR.....
Thank you 13 years of French and 3 years of Spanish study. I can just about pick my way through this. I also ordered a three volume set on the Republican airforce in the SCW that claims to be English and Spanish....we shall see when it arrives!
Slightly darkly, or synchronicitously, given the awful Gerry news & it's focus on Churchill variants; World of Books delivered a replacement for the missing book today. Cracking Hitler's Atlantic Wall - The 1st Assault Brigade Royal Engineers on D-Day. Have to say it looks great. Well-illustrated &, at a glance, full of interesting detail. Rich posts on 2F, & is a rather interesting chap.
I have felt precisely that temptation myself. Certainly didn't leave the house thinking 'must buy a nice little book about Kubelwagens', but it somehow just happens, doesn't it.
I did resist Military Landrovers and Armour in the Balkans/Yugoslavia whatever. Part of me feels I shouldn't have... Also picked up a sound copy of the Zeebrugge/Ostend despatches (wrong war, I know) and the recent Blacker biography.
