Just received in the post I did not order it but a nice surprise Charlie Company (memoir from 2 Camerons, 4th Ind Div)
Chris - you have to remember that CL1 buys books [as per the thread title] - he doesnt have time to read them TD
My name is Adam, & I have a book buying problem. It's been 36 hours since my last purchase. I bought an Osprey book in Age Concern entitled 'Knights of Christ'. Because it was an Osprey book. And I do now know a little more about the military orders, so there's that. Their horses were counted among the weapons they were allowed to personally own. Edit. Just remembered I ordered Thousand Best Churches last night. So I apologise to the group. 24hrs. And I possibly have an ecclesiastical problem creeping in.
Five minutes. Quite a few prices on the 'hmm' list seem to have dropped this week. Maybe now's a quiet time for pushers booksellers.
I don't have a book buying problem. I can stop any time I want... I do have a book storage problem and the occasional financial crisis,. but I can stop if I want to.... (and Kindle books don't count) From a cellar bunker double lined with bookshelves.....
It's an odd thing. I don't think I'm a 'bibliophile' in the way it's usually seen. I treat my books quite badly, loathe 'The Book Programme' reverence & don't understand truly treasuring first edition & signed stuff unless the signature is someone of not just literary note, or the 1st ed is genuinely unique (give me the latest revised edition, and 'some bugger has drawn in this book'). But... I do love that China clay shiny smell, so I'm probably delusional really. It's become almost as much to do with the collecting urge as the information want. I collect reference books, like I used to collect cameras. With some crossover, given the one worthwhile camera collecting reference book cost a ton... Bloody storage. Improved finances recently mean I'm stepping over books to get into my indoor shed. Gonna have to do something, but anything involving moving tons of books is always a put-off pain in the arse. Catch 22.
Here's Autumn Gale, a book I long fancied getting hold of but for one reason or another I never managed. It's been reprinted and is for sale in the Museum shop in Overloon. I resisted last time but I'm back there at the end of March...
It's a brilliant book. Currently out of print with the publisher's website taking requests to see if they cn get enough interest to justify a reprint. The production values on it are amazing so you do get value for money IMO My two most recent buys: Follow up to the Commonwealth/Allied book on the same subject. So I had to buy it to complete the set right? Finally found a copy of this book at a not too insane cost. Great stuff on the German use of captured British tanks.
Reading length of a book calculator below. It does not cover all books but will give you a rough idea of how long you need to live to complete reading your collection, however the longevity of your time on this planet will need to extended as per your own book buying problem. Reading Length | Search engine for books Just a rough guess. Average member with the problem has 400 books average pages per book 350. You should be able to clear this book with flat out reading time in approx 5.5 hours ( please note this does not take into account looking at the shiny pictures/map interpretation or sniffing the glossy pages) Reality is that you will not be able to donate your time solely for reading so assume you have 1 hour per day to read. So in reality to keep the home together and avoiding all domestic type issues the 1 hour per day is doable. Each book with therefore take at least one week. 400 weeks of reading ( This will extend with further purchases) That is approx 7.5 years of reading The reality is that you will never catch up. Please not this can be cut down as per your spare time allocated accordingly. For a point of note spare hours used as follows 2 hours on the forum (spread throughout the day) 2 hours spent trawling the internet for further purposes and purchases 4 hours spent popping to the shops for milk ( standard or lactose free) and Bread ( full grain or gluten free) which in fact turns into a charity shop/book shop trawl for further reading also included in this will be a further visit to a tea/coffee shop to get your head straight which will add a further 1 hour to the proceedings. This does not take into account working for a living or doing other normal things .
No, that can't be right . 400 books @350 pages each = 140,000 pages According to my extensive research (first result on Google) average time taken per page is 2 mins for non-technical material and 5 mins for technical. Let's give our Members the benefit of the doubt and say they take an average of 3 minutes per page. So 400 books will take 140,000 x 3 = 420,000 mins = 7,000 hrs If you read 1 hour a day that's 7,000 days or a little over 19 years
John whilst the speed of reading is quite contentious. I would add that this based purely on the numbers of books purchased and read in this thread. I assume the members would be chugging on on at a pace with their reading speed. Having said that "my pile" keeps receiving additions ( I would add mostly caused by forum members here on this thread) and with my attention span that of a deep fried doughnut I will assume that my reading of 400 books will take me circa another 50 years not including further additions. regards Clive
Ok so what have you got against doughnuts? I like them myself, are you saying they are not very intelligent? just because they maybe a minority doesnt mean you can pick on them, that might be construed as 'doughtnutism' Stand up for Doughnuts - Doughnuts for President !! TD
