Here is one I just finished of a Dodge WK60 Gantry (REME HQ) recovering a Universal Carrier (2nd Btn Wiltshire Regt.) and all belonging to the 5th (Yorkshire) Infantry Division In Italy in 1944. All models are Milicast as are the figures with decals by Pete Marshall, Aleran. Mike Starmer was a huge help and provided a coloured drawing of the camo pattern. Cheers, Neil
Thanks Clive and TD.....this one took about a month but I don't go at it every day. This one took some time to get the cab more or less right as the front mudguards needed re-shaping a bit and some of the chassis detail needed adjustment as I always add a drive-train etc. even though it isn't seen.
The 5th Div insignia is wrong. Thin white Y on a black circle was used on vehicles . Thick white Y on khaki was used for uniforms. Have mentioned on forum before & posted photos.
Thanks for your insightful response.....it seems there is some errant info out there. I searched this site for info with no luck....perhaps you could point me to the postings you refer to. It's an easy fix as I have black patches and I do have some "Y"s as well but they may be on the thicker side. A photo would be helpful. Cheers, Neil
Some 2 Wilts vehicles on The Wardrobe linked in this post 5 Div march 1945 Photos from 5th Div history showing the thin white Y & black circle used on vehicles & signage. .
Thanks kindly Owen....great info which I wish I had before marking the models. I can fix it though but will likely wait for a roundel for aerial recognition that will fit on the cab roof. Do you know if they were always in place or sometimes left off? Cheers, Neil
Don't know the answer to that one but in the 5th Div history is a carrier with a roundal on the front. edit . zoomable photo > THE BRITISH ARMY IN SICILY 1943 Notice in that pic & the 2 Wilts one which mudguard the markings are on,different to NW Europe.
Zoomable photo of the 2 Wilts carrier. THE BRITISH ARMY IN SICILY 1943 They've IDed the location wrong as explained in my old thread here. Which mark of 5th Div Universal Carrier is this, in Sicily? It is actually TRECASTAGNI
Thanks again Owen and yes I did notice the different mudguard locations for the AoS/Formation signs so now it is a little more complicated as I will just get a new set made up with a roundel and re-mark when received. Cheers, Neil
Thanks VP.....yep 1/76.....I can't imagine having enough space to store the collection I have built in 1/35!
Thanks much TD...…..once again unless my 76 year old eyes are really failing me, the patch on this site shows a dark brown. As Owen has pointed out, it should be black so yet another version. In addition, I don't see a REME patch which I would think an Inf. Div. would have and does according to other sites....more confusion it seems!!
I have just ordered another set of decals to remark the vehicles. Now, the fact that the AoS and Formation signs are on different mudguards is interesting as most of my photos of "Canadian" vehicles in the Italian campaign were the normal way ie. if looking at the front of a vehicle, the AoS would be on the mudguard to your left and the Formation sign on the right. I also have a photo of a column of vehicle with a rear view where some are the other way about. Was the regulation hard and fast or subject to interpretation. The carrier in the photo clearly has it the other way around so was that regulation or just an anomaly? I just want to get the next attempt reasonably right. Thanks in advance, Neil
Neil Interesting question to which I do not have the answer. Last year while tidying and improving some of my old models I looked at a large number of photos of vehicles in N Africa. Some had formation sign on the right and the AoS on the left, some had them the other way round and some had both on the same side. I could not discern a pattern so simply 'copied' the photo. Mike
Thanks Mike.....seems to have been loosely followed on certain fronts at least. I have one of a vehicle on it's die in Italy and it has both on the same mudguard as well. Neil
Looking at the 2 Wilts vehicles in The Wardrobe's collection there are Jeeps with the Y on the right & a White scout car with the Y on the left & those are 1945 dated pics.
Well, I'll change the carrier locations and add the new slimmer "Y" on a black background to both truck and carrier and leave the rest. Thanks for the input. Cheers, Neil
